Chemical Evolution of Urban Plumes

How well do we understand coupling of HOx, NOx, O3 and VOC photochemistry under conditions of high VOC reactivity and low NOx?

What happens to NOx and VOC oxidation products at night? In the nocturnal boundary layer? In the residual layer? How does this chemistry affect NOx, VOC, O3 and aerosol production at night and on the following day?

What factors affect the time scales for production and removal of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. generation products of biogenic terpenoid (isoprene, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, oxyterpenes) oxidation?

How do these terpenoid reactions impact the photochemical production and loss of O3, OH, and NOy species?

 
Forest-Atmosphere Interaction

What ecosystem and environmental variables control the biosphere-atmosphere exchange of reduced carbon gases, nitrogen containing gases, and aerosols?

What variables control the rate of chemistry and the gradients of these rates within the forest canopy?What are the consequences of within-canopy chemistry for the composition of the boundary layer immediately above and downwind of forests?

What is the composition of secondary organic aerosol and which products of forest emissions are incorporated into such aerosol?

What are the ecological consequences of terpenoid emissions and/or of the oxidation products of these emitted terpenoid compounds?
