FSI is the only undergraduate pre-medical program recognized by the Association of American Medical Colleges. The Field Study Internship is a 3-unit, semester long internship that gives Cal students who are thinking about a possible career in medicine an opportunity to experience the life of a physician first-hand. Interns are matched up with prominent Bay Area physicians in their field of interest (eg. pediatrics, urology, obstetrics, cardiology, plastic surgery, etc.), and they observe and interact with these physicians as they deal with patients, ethical issues, paperwork, and problems in their daily practices 6-8 hours a week. This opportunity not only provides interns with an intimate view of the life of a doctor, but also with the election of forming a relationship with that doctor.

Interns receive a unique opportunity to observe firsthand the day-to-day workings of a physician's life. Interns who shadow physicians in hospitals have an opportunity to observe their preceptor doing everything from rounds to surgeries to meetings. Those who shadow physicians in a clinical setting are able to see their preceptor run a business while performing the duties of a doctor. In addition to shadowing, interns have an opportunity to discuss, with 5-6 of their peers, current topics in health care and bioscience. The small discussion sections led by two former Interns provides an intimate setting which allows for a level of discussion that is often lacking at a university as large as Cal. The program is fulfilling because each and every intern, whether they subsequently decide to pursue a career in medicine or not, comes out of the program more aware of their place in our health care system. Shadowing a practicing physician is an experience that enables each of our interns to make a better decision about their career goals as well as their own health. Furthermore, Interns gain a broader understanding through their discussion section of some of the ethical problems physicians and our society as a whole face when it comes to health care.

Having taken PH 116/IDS 130 is a prerequisite for applying for a Field Study internship.
