  • The HMAP Experience:

As one of the only programs of its kind in the nation, HMAP is a paradigm for participatory service-learning and peer-based education in health and medicine.  By exposing youth to public health and providing opportunities to apply that knowledge by serving the community, HMAP generates long-lasting impacts in society by developing committed and engaged leaders in health care.  Many of our alumni are now esteemed health care professionals, students in prestigious graduate programs, and dedicated community advocates.  The testimonials below show how much HMAP has affected the lives of students who have gone through our program.

    • “My experiences as an intern of a local hand surgeon are unparallel to anything else I have done in college. The intimate exposure to medicine and the life of a physician became an invaluable guide to my own career decisions, to which I will be forever grateful.” –FSI Intern
    • “HMAP has been a consistent, growing presence on the UC Berkeley campus since its inception in 1984, and acts as an outstanding model for peer-based education and community outreach… Through HMAP, I discovered the field of public health, and my passion to pursue this discipline in developing my career.  I was able to realize exactly what I wanted to pursue in my graduate education largely because of the knowledge, interaction, support, camaraderie, and mentorship received from my fellow peers and faculty involved with HMAP.  ” –HMAP alumnus
    • “HMAP is an exceptional student-run organization that provides a stress-free medium for practicing physicians to contribute to the next generation of doctors. Being a practicing physician, I feel that it is important to contribute to academic medicine in order to ensure the efficacy and continuation of the medical field.” –FSI Preceptor
    • “As the field of Genetics continues to explode with both medical and sociological implications, college students benefit from early exposure to current topics in the area and need experts who actually work in the field to guide them.  I have been continually impressed by the student coordinators of the course. They are bright, mature, organized and motivated, and they provide great role models for the other students in the class. They will no doubt become leaders in their chosen areas of health and medicine.” –IDS 130 Guest Lecturer
    •  “When I enrolled in IDS130, I discovered a new face of the university. Here was a forum where, regardless of personal beliefs or opinions, one’s view was respected and considered. It was one of the few classes where I knew everyone’s name in my discussion section, and had a chance to listen to alternate viewpoints and present my own.  Being a TA has been one of the most meaningful things I have done during my time at UC Berkeley. I am moved by my students each week, as well as my fellow TAs, who bring new ideas, energy, and insight to the tough discussions we have regarding medical ethics…I look forward to dedicating my life to improving the health field because of my experience with HMAP.” –IDS130 TA
    • “As an intern, my experience with serving at a local non-profit law center broadened my view of health and was a large factor in my decision to pursue public health as a career.  Being a TA has helped me solidify my passion for public health an social justice, and I love to see that passion being passed on to successive generations of HSI interns.” –HSI TA
