Conan, The Boy in Future

In 1978, I produced the TV series Conan, The Boy in Future while I was still working with Nippon Animation. It’s a story about a boy named Conan and his grandfather who survived a devaConan, The Boy in Futurestating war between two major nations with ultramagnatic weapons resulting in the severe Earth destructions. Conan and his grandfather lived on an island alone as other survivors slowly passed away. While living on the island, Conan met a girl named Lana, and their adventure began. This was the first television series that I directed, which marked the beginning of my directing career after working as an animator for more than a decade. It was the first time that I had a chance to create the characters, write the script and direct all but two of the episodes of the animation by myself. While working on the project, I was fortunate to be aided by Takahata with part of the storyboard and directing work. I gained valuable insights and skills on directing from this opportunity. In this series, I successfully created a suspenseful plot, suspense with characters formed from the most fundamental archetypes of storytelling. You would often find yourself discovering a new layer of the characters as the journey proceeds. In all of my productions, I created each of the character from repetitively thinking of them. I became the character myself and as the character, I visited the story many, many times. The excitement shown from the audiences’ faces is the most valuable reward for all of my effort.
