About the PerspectivePremed Perspective is an organization
that was founded Spring 2003 with the intention to publish monthly newsletters
for the premed population at Cal for free. The newsletter has consisted of articles
regarding various aspects of health care, including pieces on HMO, Stem cell research,
and interviews with doctors from a variety of states. At UC Berkeley, we lack
what is called a "Pre-Medical Advising Committee" that many other colleges have.
Thus, a majority of pre-medical students at Berkeley are devoid of direction and
guidance. This newsletter is designed to allow pre-medical students to familiarize
themselves with the formidable aspects of being a pre-med. We also cover
events that happen on campus that are pre-med related so that students are informed
about pre-med activities occurring throughout Cal. We also interview professors
so that they could provide insight into their personal lives and this also allows
students to connect with professors on a more personal level. In addition, we
work closely with the pre-medical advisors at the Career Center in some articles,
so that students could be aware of the resources that are available at Cal. Our
goal is to continue to publish these monthly newsletters free of charge so that
pre-medical students could gain another bastion of support and outlet that is
both creative and informative simultaneously.

Hometown: Hacienda Heights, CA
Year: 3rd
Major/Minor: contemplating triple major in Public Health,
Molecular Cell Biology, Mass Communications
Position: Layout/Design Editor
Favorite TV Show/Movie: LOST!
I guess to put it simply, I'm one of those people who are
always trying to do everything. I love traveling and exploring
new places, and I'm trying to fit in another study abroad
escapade into these college years.. I also love the arts,
particularly visual and performing arts (such as product/graphic
design, and film/theater), and I love science and research.
I like people too, but I want them safe and healthy. Oh yeah,
and I don't really like studying all that much, but I do like
to learn.

AMBER HSIAO
Hometown: San Jose, CA
Year: 4th
Major/Minor: Public Health and Mass Communications
Position: Copy Editor
Favorite TV Show/Movie: Fight Club, any movies with
Johnny Depp in them
Though I'm not pre-med, I am interested in health advocacy.
After graduation, I want to work for print media doing copyediting
and/or writing in New York for a while, and then maybe attend
grad school for either an MPH or East Asian Studies (I love
learning languages). Hopefully I get that figured out before
I graduate!

STEPHANIE WONG
Hometown: San Francisco, CA
Year: 3rd
Major/Minor: Public Health
Position: Publicity Coordinator
Favorite TV Show/Movie:
I'm a laidback kind of girl that likes to be busy, too idealistic
for her own good, enjoys being

JESSICA CHOW
Hometown: Pinole, CA
Year: 2nd
Major/Minor: intended Public Health and MCB
Position: Technology Coordinator
Favorite TV Show/Movie: Friends, ER, CSI, Sex and the
City, anything that is comical
This is my second year with Premed Perspective. I enjoy playing
sports and working out (like gymnastics, relaxed football,
and hip hop). In my spare time, I like to volunteer at a clinic
in Berkeley that offers services to those that do not have
access to healthcare. It is a great way to see help those
in need and to realize the inequalities in our society today.
I am hoping that by learning about all the health issues in
our society, I can better help the community later. Premed
Perspective provides a great opportunity for me to learn about
health issues in the world.

DIANA YEE
Hometown: Newark, CA
Year: 4th
Major/Minor: MCB-BMB
Position: contributing staff writer
Favorite TV Show/Movie: The Incredibles
I'm from a small city right next to/enclosed in Fremont (end
of the BART line, for those who don't know ^_^), proud Newark
Memorial High School alumni! I look forward to this coming
year, as I finish my 4th year and move onto pharmacy school
(yes, I'm not pre-med, much to the stereotypes out there).
As my fourth year in Premed Perspective, I have to say that
this is our biggest year in transiitioning into new changes
for the newsletter...it may not even be called PreMed Perspective
anymore after I graduate! Seeing all these changes occur gives
me a sense of pride for the newsletter as it is expanding
its audience from pre-med students to other pre-health students.
I can't wait to see what this year has in store for me and
this newsletter; I look forward to the new changes at bay!
