The Mesmerizing Meteor Shower
If you yearn to be chic and blend in with current Asian pop culture, then you can't miss Meteor Garden. This TV series, produced in Taiwan, is based on a
popular Japanese comic strip. Meteor Garden has swamped the entire China, Hong Kong and Taiwan media market since its release in 2001. As confessed by the
producer, MissYang Meteor Garden was started by a group of cartoon fans that did not have any former or formal experience in TV episode production.
Initially, its episodes were only shown once a week in a midnight slot. However, after the fourth episode aired, Meteor Garden received unexpected
enthusiasm from the audience, which is even greater than the most popular soap opera. Popularity and interest is overwhelming!

GuQin: The Chinese Zither for Cultivation
The experience of GuQin's music is an intensely personal sensation. I like
many music instruments, but I only love the GuQin, the Chinese music instrument
for cultivation since ancient time. Some music, especially some western
music, is either too splendid or too emotional. GuQin's music, in contrast,
does not have many extravagant notes, and its sound is gentle and peacefully
deep. However, the melody contains intricate patterns, and can carry deep
emotions. Its music is "beautiful but not bewitching" (美而不艷), and "sorrowful
but not woeful"(哀而不傷), thus the Chinese also called it the Dao, for
the music of GuQin restore peace to those who have tumultuous hearts. Unfortunately,
after thousands of years, this Qin which once had dominated the Chinese
culture and was itself the perfect unity of Chinese philosophy has faded
out from the society. Today, except for those who have a more profound
understanding of the Chinese culture, not many people know what Qin is,
or would even mistake it for the zheng (the common Chinese zither with bridges
on surface). Thus to increase awareness of this healing instrument, I would
like to introduce its history and basic philosophy here in the hope to arouse
interest for further study.
