On this program, a former Commissioner in the U.S. General Services Administration discusses these ideas. 8/22/2001 -- Michele Gassaway, media director for the Stanford Blood Center, discussed the current deficit in the local blood supply. INTERVIEW DESCRIPTION: Blood Banks rely on constant donations to keep the supply of blood constant. However, the Bay Area is currently experiencing a shortage in its supply. This program focussed on the current shortage in the Bay Area Blood Supply. 8/15/2001 -- A debate on issues surrounding genetic engineering of food with Dr. Martina McGloughlin, director of the Biotechnology and Life Sciences Informatics Program at U.C. Davis and Dr. Peter Rosset, advisor to the Institute for Food and Development Policy. INTERVIEW DESCRIPTION: Genetic engineering of crops is a technique that carries both social as well as political issues. This program featured a debate on issues surrounding genetic engineering. 8/8/2001 -- Dr. Robert Bowman , former director of the Star Wars missile defense program during the Ford and Carter administrations, discussed his views on space-based missile defense. INTERVIEW DESCRIPTION: Space-based missile defense is a controversial issue. And, it is unclear if it is practically useful. On this program, a former director of the Star Wars missile defense program discussed his objections to the Star Wars program. 8/1/2001-- Judy Huang of UCLA discussed the science behind music. INTERVIEW DESCRIPTION: Music is a field which apparently defies scientific explanation. In fact, much of music is rooted in mathematical and scientific concepts. This show focused on the scientific concepts underlying music. 7/25/2001 -- Berkeley's Steve Garret, David Dobervich, and Gaea Zhou on issues in stem cell research. INTERVIEW DESCRIPTION: Stem cell research involves the use of undifferentiated cells to produce a wide variety of mature cell lines. Controversies surrounding this field have galvanized both the scientific community and public at large. This show focussed on discussion of issues surrounding stem cell research. 7/18/2001 -- Stephanie Huang of U.C. Berkeley explained how clams are responsible for cleaning the ocean.  (Listen MP3) INTERVIEW DESCRIPTION: The ocean is a complex ecosystem that is self-sustaining on many levels. In particular, it is able to recycle the waste products that are produced. This program focused on a couple of these mechanisms. 7/11/2001 -- Ashwin Alankar of U.C. Berkeley discussesd mathematical modeling of the stock market. INTERVIEW DESCRIPTION: The stock market is an example of complex non-linear system. Predicting the fluctuations in the stock market has been the holy grail for mathematical modelers in recent times. This show covered recent attempts to predict these fluctuations in the market. 7/4/2001 -- Prof. Ann Swidler of U.C. Berkeley discussed perceptions of love in marriage. INTERVIEW DESCRIPTION: The perception of love differs according to the state a person is experiencing. Some psychologists refer to this as cognitive dissonance.
