Access Your E-Mail with Apple Mail
Creating a Mail Account:
- Apple Mail is located in the Applications folder.
- Open the application, and select Preferences... from the Mail menu.
- Select Add Account from the Preferences window.

Account Information:
- Select either "POP" or "IMAP" from the Account Type pull-down
menu.
- With a POP account, all the mail on the server is
downloaded to your computer at once. By default, Apple Mail
deletes mail messages after they are downloaded using this method.
In the Advanced tab there is an option to prevent the
messages from being deleted. If you only read your OCF e-mail
messages from one computer, you may elect to use a POP account.
- With an IMAP account, only the headers are downloaded to
your mailbox. The mail messages and mailboxes are stored on the
server along with basic info like which messages have already
been read. In Apple Mail, read messages are downloaded to your
computer permanently by default. You can disable this behavior if
you wish. If you access your mail from more than one computer,
you probably want to use IMAP.
- Choose anything for Description. I use "OCF"
- Use "username@ocf.berkeley.edu" for your E-Mail Address
- Use "mail.ocf.berkeley.edu" for your Incoming Mail Server
- Your User Name is your OCF username.
- Your Password is your OCF password.
- for the Outgoing Mail Server, select Options... and enter
"mail.ocf.berkeley.edu"

Using SSL:
- Click on the Advanced tab in your new account set-up window.
- Check the box labeled Use SSL
- Click OK

Tip: Your mailbox is only 10 MB and it might get full pretty quickly. With a POP account, this usually isn't a problem because your mail is deleted from the server once it downloads to your computer. With an IMAP account, however, you must move messages out of your OCF mailboxes and into mailboxes on your computer. You can do this by selecting New Mailbox... from the Mailbox menu and creating a new mailbox with a Location : "On My Mac." Drag your old messages to the new mailbox to delete them from the server.
