Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund
Since 1961, the Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund has provided need-based grants to student activists who are able to do academic work at the college level and who are actively involved in the movement for social and economic justice. US citizenship is not a requirement but there is a strong preference for grantees who are building the progressive movement in the United States. Davis-Putter scholars are both graduate and undergraduate students and must be enrolled in an accredited school for the time period covered by their grant.

Early recipients fought for civil rights, against McCarthyism and to stop the war in Vietnam. More recently, grantees have included people active in the struggle against racism, sexism, homophobia and other forms of oppression; building the movement for economic justice; and creating peace through international, anti-imperialist solidarity.

The maximum grant is $6,000 and may be considerably smaller depending on the applicant's circumstances and the amount of funding available. All of the funds for scholarships come from the contributions of individual donors.

Applications are available for the upcoming academic year and can be requested by sending a stamped self-addressed envelope to the Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund, 25 Main Street, Belleville, NJ 07109. In order to give applicants time to apply, any request for an application must be received by April 20, 2001.

Completed applications and supporting documents -- including a personal statement, financial aid reports, letters of recommendation, transcripts and a photograph -- must be postmarked no later than May 1, 2001. Applicants will be notified of the Fund's decisions in July.
