We arrived before noon, with a lot of time to acclimate to Christchurch. The city is pedestrian-friendly and easy to navigate, and James quickly found our way to Cathedral Square near the center of town. We stayed at the excellent Camelot Hotel, which was affordable in spite of its extravagance, and perfectly situated in the Square.
I remember feeling elated, refreshed, and energized by the crisp air, the clear skies, the piercing sunlight, and the prettiest seagulls I'd ever seen. Only later would I realize they were just the first of many incredible birds I'd meet in New Zealand.
Not all of these were taken in the Square. We walked along the Avon River, as well as entered the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, which is where Peacock Fountain (#20) is located.
