I walked by a public art installation one evening on the way to a bad Italian dinner, and was entranced by the ghostly scene projected silently onto a giant rock in front of the Cathedral. At first I couldn't tell what it was, because the uneven surface of the rock distorted the projected image; then I was able to make out a woman clad in lingerie clinging to some ocean rocks, trying to avoid being swept away by the waves that were washing over her. If I hadn't had somewhere else to be, I would've stayed much longer to absorb this intriguing and beautiful work of art I never noticed during daylight hours.
From eSCAPE, a NZ community art group: "Artists Keri Whaitiri and Rachel Rakena collaborated to create Ahakoa he iti, an audio-visual installation that is a contemporary take on a traditional mauri stone. A mauri stone is a stone that contains a spiritual essence or life force.
"Moving images of a dancer are projected from the ChristChurch Cathedral onto and around a large boulder positioned directly in front. These ephemeral projections seek to evoke an indigenous presence that engages with the rough natural rock surface while juxtaposing the present day urban environment of Cathedral Square."
