counter Otago Peninsula Wildlife Tour

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS WITH NATURE

The next two pages include pictures taken from the Otago Peninsula. We went with the highly recommended Elm Wildlife Tours, which I would highly recommend as well. Sean was our fabulous guide, and like everyone else in the NZ tourism industry, he was socially and environmentally enlightened.

As it wasn't albatross-sighting season, we were lucky to see one royal albatross, far off in the distance, gliding just inches over the surface of the ocean. It looked like a miniature airplane. I was thrilled, but wished I could have seen it a little closer. I'll have to return someday, since I am now totally in love with royal albatrosses.

These first five photos were taken in Dunedin on the morning of our wildlife tour. I wasn't keeping track of the days, so I was surprised when I walked into the visitor centre and saw the calendar on the wall.

The second picture is of the Arc Cafe. It purported to be hip and trendy, but in a way that was shallow and unimportant to me, and thus different from the trendiness of the warm and cozy Mainstreet Cafe in Christchurch. Arc Cafe's food was good, but apparently they had limited ingredients the day we were there, so we could barely order anything off their menu without being told they couldn't serve it. I also got a snobby, cold vibe from the people (both customers and employees) there, so I wouldn't recommend this place aside from the fact that it is nicely decorated and probably fun for most other people out there who aren't as paranoid and neurotic as I am.

Finally, 147-149 capture the inside of the liberal St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral, located in The Octagon. In 149, the cross is actually a hanging transparent sheet (of glass or plastic) with the cross superimposed on it. Funky!
