We stayed at the tiny Chalet Backpackers, situated at the top of a steep street in a quiet residential area south of The Octagon. It was a sweat-inducing march up there, but once you accept it, it's fine. The views from our room were the most rewarding part of choosing Chalet for our two-night stay in Dunedin.
At this point in the trip James wanted to do some laundry. We were at the perfect place, as Chalet will do your laundry, "just like Mom did," for a fee. In the morning he put his dirty clothes in a basket, I threw in some of my own underwear and socks, and when we came back later that day, everything was clean, fresh, folded; the socks were even matched and balled up.
We were now ready to get down and dirty in Milford Sound.
