Interesting excel problem a few days ago. Another workaround needed to be developed. It had to do with how Microsoft doesn't evaluate cells until needed. That's great optimization usually but not with Excel. This causes lots of problems with re-formatting. As far as I can tell it's just laziness on MS's part. I haven't tested to see if the same problem exists in Excel 2003 yet.
Recently put up 2 Dell Windows 2003 Server's. My underling, well not really she's too nice to be that, informs me that there are already a few patches out for it as well. Glitch-ware that's what it is. It's not running yet so I can't TS into it to try it out but soon...
Ever read someone else's code to try to figure out what was going on? That's exactly what is going on with my Intranet. Except the previous guy was nice enough to leave the commenting up to me. Hahaha
I'm convinced that the AC Transit drivers don't know routes before they start a new one. We had a guy couple days ago, go towards the Bay Brridge and ask which way do we go. Then today this woman goes all the way to the Emeryville plaza area to loop back to Watergate.
I like this new McDonalds promotion. Get a large or supersize fry and get $1 For Best Buy.
Snow season is in a month. It's been pretty dry though. Mmmm.
Jean Armour Kelly invented the term, "Surfing the internet".
The guy running one of the demos at the Office Launch kind of screwed up and wasn't able to demonstrate some features. He later joked that he could use Share Point to look up job listings later. Everyone laughed but I bet everyone wondered how much truth was in that joke. We all remember what happened to that guy that got the Blue Screen while demoing Windows. Re-assigned to Microsoft Siberia.
This girl kept on screaming Mercedes every few seconds while I was going to the bus 2 days ago. I wonder if she was trying to catch up to someone or was playing "I Spy" with herself.
The Daylight Saving (Saving not Savings!!!) Time is really messing with me. It's now much darker when I leave work now.
Last week, I got a ride from a guy that had a baby seat in the back. Usually drivers only pick up 2 extra passengers to fulfill the carpool requirement. Sometimes, when there aren't as many cars as people though, people start picking up 3 people. That was certainly the case last week and I got into the backseat and the woman in front of me got in the front. The girl from the Y bus who also apparently missed it started to come in as well as I was sitting in the seat next to the child seat. So imagine me, sitting there with this look of embarassment mumbling something about seats while this girl has this confused expression on her face wondering why I'm not moving over. For a split second, it was like I was denying her the privilege of getting into the car because she had How To Get Into Law School books and Anne Taylor handbags. She did finally get the idea though and shut the door.
I dressed Steve Jobs Black one day at work. I think I scared people.
WTF!!! Indiana Jones Widescreen Edition doesn't get the extra fifth disc but the Fullscreen version does? What gives?
I was just thinking...cruising around the bay in a boat would be fun. Landings right near my house. All I need is a lifevest, flares, a rubber boat, outboard and I'm good to go.
It's no wonder I didn't catch the bus twice last week. Yesterday, the bus came 5 min early and didn't wait until it was supposed to leave to do so. There actually was a long line for carpooling today. Not of cars...of people.
A guy in the elevator asked me what the ux-50 was. I assume that it looks too much like a gaming platform than a straight up pda. Sometimes, I say that it's a camera when they ask if it's a camera. Next time, I'll say its a remote detonation device. Uh just kidding!
Man, I left work at 6 yesterday so I needed to take the BART/Emery-Go-Around. There is a LOT of people on these nighttime buses.
Walked by someone with the stench of piss hanging around them. It's enough to make your stomach churn. I wasn't expecting it either so I get a full blast.
Finished off my Starbucks Gift Card recently. Sniff sniff.
And the winner is...CATHY!!! Geez.

Kiki, Mandeep's dog apparently died last week. Utter shock to me. Died in a car accident. Very sad. I've created a page in her memory.
Longhorn is the next version of Windows...released to developers earlier in the week.
For a file download of Longhorn screenshots, click here. Enjoy!!!
Fires are raging in SoCal. A friend of mine's family had to evacuate. My sister's car had ash all over it. Supposedly, at least some of the fires are suspected to be arson. Sucks. Yesterday on TV, there was footage of this guy crying because he had just been notified that his kids had died while stuck in a car. Man...
Freakin people in China...man, they gotta lay off the dogs...but I guess that's what Hindus think when they see us eating cows...still...
How about this guy in Japan? Poor salarymen.
Been looking at DVD burners...went to Best Buy...man, they marked up Hard Drives $100. Makes me soooo angry. Still didn't get a burner even though I really need it. My DVD reader started working for a while but now its back to being crapped out. I wonder if cleaning it will help.
Crimson Skies is fun.
Had a eating fest with Chu/Cheng. Hahaha. I'll write more about it later. Gotta get to work.
Probably the biggest thing that happened was the Office 2003 Launch Party. It happened this Thursday at the Graham Auditorium right next to City Hall. Woke up extra early so I could get some business done at work before heading off. I had signed up for the entire day 9AM-5PM but I was planning on leaving at noon. In any case, I left work at 8:50AM and hopped on the Muni to the Civic Center. First time taking it in that direction (the only other time was to go to Pac Bell Park). When I got there I passed by Michael from OC and Linus from Calperfs. Apparently, they had just come to get the freebies but were coming back later at 4PM to pick up vouchers. I was like...Darn, have to come back at 4? Anyways, I signed in and got some free breakfast before going to the auditorium. They had a powerpoint up about the history of Office and some cool tidbits. It really was the same ol' spiel that I head heard 2 years ago or so at the Office XP Launch, so I started looking through the freebie bag. Man, very impressive. Last time, they gave MapPoint 2002 (to which I am eternally grateful...great software). They had trials of Office 2003, Visio 2003, OneNote 2003, Frontpage 2003, Outlook 2003 Business Contact Manager, Project 2003, SharePoint Portal Server 2003, Live Communications Server 2003, SharePoint Services, Server 2003!!!, Exchange Server 2003. All told 13 discs plus 2 others (security tools...whatnot). Last time they had office and SharePoint. I was getting kinda tired of the speech so I decided to just go back to the office early and come back later. As I was leaving though, I saw a guy leave with a T-Shirt. I suddenly had the urge to get a T-Shirt too. When I got up the courage to go ask for one, I was told that they were supposed to be given out at 4PM along with the voucher. I said to the woman, "For What..." and she answered,"The Voucher." I'm like,"For What..." Finally she got the hint and said, "It's for the full version of Office 2003 and OneNote 2003." GEEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Man, so glad I made it on Thursday. After some runaround, I was able to fanagle the t-shirt and the voucher without having to wait till 4PM. Let's just say I was very forceful. I'm glad I asked for a XL cause they vacuum packed it and it seriously felt like paper when I tried it on. It's a good thing I went back to the office cause it turned out that I was needed for some database report cleanup. Yay! Leaving early also meant that I could use the transfer from Muni to ride back to the office for free. Yay!
I got Office 2003 running on my office computer almost immedietely and I like it. I esp like the email organizer, the calendar look, and the mail message notification popups. I'm going to tryout the Infopath program cause that seems to be one of the most useful applications for me to try out at this point. It's really too bad that my CD drives don't work anymore or else I would have installed them at home as well. So right now, I've migrated most of the hardware over to the old Dell. I definitely think it's a mobo/cd drive problem. In any case, 320GB of disk space and nice mobo/cpu configuration looks really nice about now. You know, with 320GB of space, that would bring my total hard drive space a little over half a terabyte. If I spent another $300 or so for hard drive space, I'd have a terabyte. Hmm... Not having a DVD burner, let alone a CD burner really blows. I can't archive so my hard drives are pretty much full now...Really annoying. A good DVD burner looks to be around $150~$200 now. I'm not sure if I'm going to go Serial ATA anytime. Maybe I'll mix and match. Use Serial for OS and EIDE for data storage.
Live near the Palo Alto IKEA or the Emeryville IKEA? Go here and get yourself a free meatball plate. They're small but free and good mean GREAT things.
Man, there was a really long line at Bank of America the other day. It stretched out to the door and I was the last one there. Got a few of those new $20s. Mmmmmm. Smelled so good.
I saw a kid in a CLK the other day. Brand new. Reminded me of the high school girl at Stanford that drove one. Freakin kids.
I refuse to get TV dinners now because I don't want to end up looking like the people who buy them. Funny thing is, Lih-Chern came home yesterday with some and inside I was like,"Hmm....Salisbury Steak."
Listen to This American Life. I got hooked via NPR.

I saw My Sassy Girl at Old Teahouse the other day. First it was Shaolin Soccer, now this. Man, I love getting food AND being able to watch a movie. They need to put up movie showtimes or something. Sassy Girl was pretty funny but really frustrating at times. Almost wanted to knock Cha Tae-hyun on the head a couple times during the movie.
On NPR, I heard some guy using the terms "Office of Fatherland Security" and "J Edgar Ashcroft". Hahahaha. I need to get a button that says "SPY" on it and go around looking at people funny and say,"I'm watching you..." Freak people out!
I got the Costco Executive Membership cause the guy said that I was guaranteed to make the additional membership fee back in a year. Sounds suspiciously like I'm loaning them money interest free but what the hey, Costco isn' going to just disappear in a year. So here's what I got in my first Costco run on my card. Huge tray of rainbow trout, clam chowder and crew socks. Total was like $30, so my 2% rewards comes to 30 cents. Guaranteed return here I come. Afterwards, I went and got me a Costco hot dog. Buck fifty. 3 bucks if you feel hungry. Sucks that you can't have just the hot dog without a soda. At a dollar a hot dog, you can't go wrong. The one's at Union Square cost $3.50 and don't come with a drink. What a rip.
I made rainbow trout for dinner. In true "God of Cookery" fashion, I have named it, "Tears of Sorrow" trout. I tried "Crescent" trout but the other one was so much better.
Went to the Trader Vic's on the Emeryville Boardwalk right by my house. They had these huge Chinese ovens to cook in. Hmm mmm mmm. The baking of the pork was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good. MAN. I need an oven like that in my home. I had some Foie Gras. I know that they torture the ducks to enlarge the liver but MAN, the taste was incredible. It was like lamb but smooth. I don't think I'll eat it again though. Once is enough. The salt shaker at Trader Vic's looks a lot like Strongbad. Trader Vic's is kinda strange because the person who takes your order (the Captain) and the person who bring's the food (the Waiter) get separate tip lines. I was like WTF?!!! I just split it. No idea on that one. Both do about the same amnt of work. NOT MUCH. Then again, I don't rant and complain at every little thing so they don't really need to do much.
Thus far, these are the only people that I know with blogs/website. It's such a short sad list.
Annie Chiu
Victor Hwei
Cathy Chou
Cathy Chou again
Gee-Won Kim
Jackson Perdue
Big Jesse
Juliet Hsu
Naomi Ture
Jenny Liao at MIT had one but that has mysteriously disappeared.
Didn't Adam have a journal? Hmm...
People carrying boxes in SF really scary me. It's ingrained in my head that these unlucky people have just been fired. It's further reinforced when there are binders or office supplies inside. Like making off with the red swingline stapler. Did you know that the red swingline costs more than the black or tan versions? Was it because of Office Space? Hmm...
Carrot cake at the CMR October Birthday celebration. Ehhhh..... Put that next to Taro cake or Pumpkin cake as my un-fav food.
No luck for the Y route. The guy heard back and said that there was going to be no way the Y route is going to be saved. I may have to take another route. Hopefully they'll just add another stop to another route.
Lots of Halloween decorations at the Clipper Club. People were watching the Yankee's Championship game when I was there last. As I was in the restroom, this guy comes to the stall next to me, puts his free hand on the wall, and starts making this groaning/moaning/grunting noises. I was so freaked out. The restroom is really small to begin with and I didn't need this crazy-piss-dude making obscene sounds couple inches away from me. Got out of there ASAP. Man, what is with that guy? I'm hoping it was like prostate cancer or some jungle-Thai STD. Any other reason, I don't even want to think about.
I wonder if you can rent that big room at the Clipper Club like how the Kite Hill Clubhouse could be rented as well. That would be sweet.
Did you know that the largest Muslim country in the world is Indonesia? For some reason that seems so weird. Infact, some of the most ardent anti-americans are the leaders in that region including the guy in charge of Malaysia who recently said that Jews rule the world by proxy and other racist comments. Doesn't Malaysia depend on the US for jobs at the numerous plants in that country? This guy was calling on his Muslim brothers to unite and stuff. I liked what he was saying about how Muslim countries should embrace technology to move forward (although he probably meant "defense" systems and not the next-generation energy source).
Mr. Gates was interviewed during a European technology conference (where he was trying to get the EU off MS' back) recently and the QA was a good insight to his life now. He revealed that he washes dishes and when he was asked which european country did he like the most. He responded China, for changing all the rules. The rule mainly to not to try to go against Microsoft. Of course, China isn't in Europe. Must have been the jet-lag. China is of course on his mind after it announced along with a consortium of other countries that it would start an open-source operating system project of its own. Think of it. Asia controls manufacturing, mainly Taiwan, and now its looking at controlling the operating system. All it needs now is to control the processor/hd development and that sector gets moved over to Asia entirely. Pretty scary stuff. Better brush up on my chinese. Hahahaha. Groan.
More later...
My quest to upgrade my computer has yielded many interesting results. Luckily, I'm a member of a great many forums so asking around has always helped me out. Years ago when I made my computer, all OC'ers and gamers pretty much went the AMD route. Now it seems, that people are liking Intel solutions more and more. Something has really changed in the cpu/mobo scene. Has anyone noticed how Microsoft is teaming up with Phoenix to create BIOSs? MAn, as if we didn' have enough security leaks or crash's already at the operating system level. Do we really want to add another layer that Microsoft will have control over? I predict that we'll start having bi-weekly BIOS updates once MS-Phoenix start rolling. Groan.
I was about to grab an East Bay Express today but stopped short because of a huge highly-developed spider web inside. I didn't see it but I kept thinking if a spider the size of what Mel got her hands on was in there. That spider was incredibly persistant. I think I must have ruined its web 2 or 3 times.
Chris, Lorie Lori, and Eric (Chris' brother) came over
yesterday. Went to
Chevy's for some Tex-Mex. Gotta love those flour tortillas. Afterwards, we
watched "Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail. It's been awhile
so I laughed a lot. Tim the Enchanter gets me every single time.
Apparently, my flash intro is missing the goURL function button. Not sure when I'll have time to fix that but I did add a link up there as a temporary fix. Gomen!
In other news, Taiwan now has the world's tallest building. Here's a slideshow from Yahoo. It's 508 meters tall (1666.7 feet) .
Microsoft is trying to update its poor security image by changing the way they do updates. Updates will now have ease of application in mind. NO more weekly newletters. I got my monthly newsletter on Wednesday. Hopefully no more "multiple-rebooting updates". We're looking at server-side updates but that may take little longer to implement. We do have over 100 machines though so any one of them can be the dedicated workstation update server.
I'm typing this on my way home on the bus. I can see my apartment but the traffic turns what could be a 5 min drive into a 30-40 min one. At least it's better than going to BART. I have a BART schedule program on my Clie which is useful though. I used it to find directions to a station and also times for trains.
Once in a while, the people outside my office (it's open-door policy) say some erroneous things. One guy was talking about KIll Bill. A person asked when the second part was coming out and the guy said "November next year..." I almost wanted to scream,"It's next February!" The mis-information getting passed around is staggering. Didn't feel comfortable poking my head out and pointing it out though cause they are like 10 years older than me and I feel a bit sorry enough for them anyways. I can hear almost every single conversation in that room. It's not that I'm trying to or anything but I guess they train their voices to be loud and clear. I hear about failed relationships, who's hot or not, the latest news. All very interesting.
Man, am I tired. I'm so beat. My head is spinning from the ASP.
I recently acquired a print of Hokusai's "In the Hollow of a Wave off the Coast at Kanagawa" for the back wall. Its a pretty massive picture which I'd like to frame but I don't want to spend $100 doing that. I'll need to get some quotes. It's 25 x 37 cm.
The new flash intro is up. Gotta start working on the winter version :-)
This Cubs game is really something. Feel really sorry for that guy who interfered with the fly ball last night.
Take a look at this...all I need is a couple more different people to have my site be viewed all over the world.

Old Tea House is my friend. Went with Paul to In-N-Out for lunch sometime ago. Man, it's been a while since I updated. Good thing, I wrote everything down in the Clie. Just looking over what I wrote. Oh yeah, as I was in Gap on Market St., I saw a bra that was labelled "Wireless Bra". Instantly, I thought,"What? It's got internet? Where and which protocol?" Hehehe. This happens all the time. I saw a bike today that was labelled VBR and I thought sampling techniques. That last last weekend, I got excited cause I saw a sign for a sushi place I hadn't seen before in the Union Square area. Unfortunatly, it was closed as was the Tony Roma's next to it. It seemed like it had been closed for months. I wonder why it hasn't been replaced already since it's in really good territory.
Went to a new clean place near Union Square though called Tomi's Teriyaki. It's mascot is this little Japanese boy who inherited a ancient family recipe "Sauce of a Thousand Smiles"?. In any case, it's good Chashu Ramen.
After watching an Eason Chan video at Old Tea House, I think he's slightly queer. Look at him with that hat. I wasn't the only one laughing and pointing at the screens. I saw a video entitled "No Penn No Gain". Hahahaha
I saw Duplex with Chris and Lorie (not Laurie). Crazy stuff. Good movie though and an alright ending.
Squid from 99 Ranch is cheap and for some reason it makes a good part of a meal. My mom makes it better though.
Frutti de Mare at Pasta Pomodoro is so cheap and good I don't know why people order other stuff. I seem to be the only one that orders it. Everything else seems to be a waste of money.
Being on the 14th(13th) floor is nice but there is a downside. The elevators. During the noon and afternoon rushes, I usually need to stop and 4 floors to get out to the ground level. At noon today, got stopped at FLoors 4 3 and 2. Leaving work, stopped at 12,11,8,3 I wonder if I'll ever experience a 10+ stop day. With the capacity of the elevators and the fact that there are 6 elevators, it really shouldn't happen but...
Oh no!!! Starting December, AC Transbay Route Y discontinued? Say it ain't so!!! I signed a petition someone passed around to try to persuade them to not do it. I might just have to go with the 3 other ways to get to work.
"Giants are out while the A's are going for it in their decisive battle. Giants are being really whiny about it. Sad day for Giants fans. At least Barry seems to be taking it like a man. Would have been nice to get some homers in the World Series or the Championship but it just wasn't meant to be." Well the A's were in but they got beat. Now it seems that it's actually possible that there be a Red Sox-Cubs meeting. Crazy stuff.
Guy with beer can on bike. What is the law about that? He had the can in the water bottle holder. Since it wasn't open, it probably was ok.
Looksmart, a search engine company in SF, counted MSN for 70% of its business. Now that MS has announced that it will be developing its own search engine, Looksmart plunged in stock and will now probably downsize. Man that sucks.
At Old Tea House, they mistakenly gave me To Go a Seafood Baked Dish instead. It's a more expensive dish so it was cool...hehehe. Good sauce. I want to sneak into their kitchen and watch them make stuff.
So Arnold is now our new Governer. If the White Sox and the Cubs meet in the World Series, we'll know that it's the coming of the apocalypse. No joking. I'm not sure what a bodybuilder turned actor turned governer will do to our state but hopefully he'll let Warren take the reins and manage this state like a broken mutual fund. Wonder what Grey Davis is going to do now.
I had to come into work early for the NSBA launch. When I arrived in SF, the stars were still out. It was Customer Service Week, last week so we had lots of fun activities scattered throughout. I won a $5 Starbucks gift certificate for completing the Scavanger hunt quickest. :-) Man, I finished off a whole OJ liter that morning. Good thing, I was able to leave early or else I would have died.
Bart bathrooms have this smell about them that REALLY REALLY makes it pretty unbearable.
Do you know the fLags of the Nordic countries? They're all based on the Dannebrog or Danish flag. I must upload pics of them cause you never know when that info may come in handy.
I recently saw the boxer dude in the median on Stanford St again. That guy shadow boxes every once in a while.
I hung out with Eric and Fred on Saturday. We had some cheap Chinatown food and some good Dan Ta at the Golden Gate bakery. Afterwards, we went across Golden Gate to Muir Beach and hung out. It was Fleet Week last week as well, so the Blue Angels kept on buzzing the skyscrapers and making a general ruckus. Every once in a while, there would be this. ROROROOROOOROR. Paul said he saw one rise almost vertically from his office at Citibank. Anyways, when we got to Muir Beach, we saw this sign warning against touching the water since apparently, there were bacteria all over. Unfortunatly, some kids went in anyways. At least, it seems they were ok and not screaming about burning eyes. We saw a three legged dog which Eric named Tripod. Afterwards we went to Muir Beach Overlook and then played some Soul Calibur 2. We went to see Kill Bill Vol.1 (awesome sword fights and quirkly dark humor). Had dinner at CPK where I got the Jambalaya again.
Actually it's called Devil's Tower. I'd like to see it in person some time but Wyoming? Have to add in Yellowstone to make it worthwhile.
There's a strange ache in my right knee early in the mornings. Am I aging already?
I saw a man in full camo gear at B&M today. I think I like it better than Ming's Coffee Shop next door.
Today I saw a guy playing bagpipes near the stone monument near Highway 24. Weird.
Vin Diesel's real name is Mark Vincent. Not too bad. I was hoping it'd be something like Ralph Summers. I saw "A Man Apart" which had a very interesting party scene. If you liked the club scene in Romeo Must Die (You know what I'm talkin about...), then go and rent "A Man Apart". Not a bad Diesel film. Actually chokes you up a bit. haha
I hate how BR's sales are now all polo shirts. Erggh.
I don't know how they did it but last week's win over USC was truly
amazing. Triple overtime. Wow. All those spoiled rich kids I saw that
day went home in shame. Number what again in the nation? Hahaha.
That's a longggg trip home fellas. Great Giant's game
yesterday. Today
however was a very sad day. 8-5? The A's game with the Red Sox was truly a
knee-gripper though with tons of crucial 3-2 situations and being tied
till the 12th inning. That's right, the 12th inning. That game lasted
wayyyyy into the night. At least 1 Bay Area team got some good news.
