August 29, 2005 - 9:40PM - Explosion / Cake / Angela's Bday / Bridge

There was an explosion in SF a few weeks ago due to an faulty underground transformer. Manhole covers flew off, the Ralph Lauren store had its windows blown in incl its awning caught on fire, and a women sustained critical injuries due to being "engulfed" in flames. People at the office claimed that the boom shook the windows a bit and you could see a little smoke. It was really interesting the first couple minutes cause we pretty much all assumed the worst since there are so many buses near there. Thankfully it wasn't though.

Fruit cake for Emily's dad...it was ok...the mango slices on the side were sliced micro thin.

Went to Saigon...I love this great seafood soup.

Seafood rice

Sea bass with eggplant...a little saltier than I like but there was enough rice.

Red bean soup...I finished it all! I'm pretty adverse to beans except for edamame. I've gotten better about beans recently though...

Todai...it was like a crab festival! We went here for Angela's birthday.

Everyone chipped in to add to the crab collection

Getting full?

Cakes and cakes

Was going to photoshop this one to remove the chair...oh well

A noogie

Emily got Angela a green ipod

The ipod trio

Emily-style udon...all veggies!!! It was pretty good!

New bridge construction alongside the Bay Bridge...onramp

One side is like 70-80% completed...I'm assuming that its the eastbound side.

Little blurry since I was taking these in a hurry

August 25, 2005 - 9:00AM - The Dave & Buster's Story / Dish vs. Pan

What no pictures? That's right...for now at least. I'll probably get the next batch up before we leave for LA on Friday. I just thought I'd post in here to clarify some things that were being posted in the scratcher.

The Dave & Buster's Story

So we were at the bar at Dave & Buster's (Emily, Angela, and I) waiting for our Strawberry Daiquiris. All of a sudden Angela or Emily gasped and said that one of the guys at the counter had just proposed. I couldn't believe it and kept stating that it just wasn't possible. Dave & Buster's isn't McDonalds but still it's not the best place to propose you know? I kept on thinking of scenarios where we could have misunderstood but Emily and Angela were convinced since they saw a ring being passed over. There was a lot of hugging going around but I wasn't sure if it was hugging due to friends having not seen each other for awhile or the news of the engagement. In any case, it was somewhat amusing that the guy chose to do it at a bar while drinking a cold one. Guess he needed the support structure that only Dave & Buster's, a cold beer, loud music, bunch of people around, can provide. What bothered me was how unexcited he seemed. Maybe he's one of those who just finally gave up and threw in the towel.

Dish vs. Pan...a game of semantics

From Merriam-Webster...

dish
Pronunciation: 'dish
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English disc plate, from Latin
discus quoit, disk, dish, from Greek diskos, from dikein to throw
1 a : a more or less concave vessel from which food is served b :
the contents of a dish
2 a : food prepared in a particular way b : something one
particularly enjoys : CUP OF TEA
3 a (1) : any of various shallow concave vessels; broadly : anything
shallowly concave (2) : a directional receiver having a concave
usually parabolic reflector; especially : one used as a microwave
antenna b : the state of being concave or the degree of concavity
4 a : something that is favored b : an attractive or sexy person
pan
Pronunciation: 'pan
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English panne, from Old English (akin to Old
High German phanna pan), from Latin patina, from Greek patanE
1 a : a usually broad, shallow, and open container for domestic
use (as for warming, baking, or frying) b : any of various
similar usually metal receptacles: as (1) : the hollow part of
the lock in a firelock or flintlock gun that receives the priming
(2) : either of the receptacles in a pair of scales (3) : a round
shallow metal container for separating metal (as gold) from waste
by washing
2 a (1) : a natural basin or depression in land (2) : a similar
artificial basin (as for evaporating brine) b : a drifting fragment
of the flat thin ice that forms in bays or along the shore
3 : HARDPAN 1
4 slang : FACE
5 : a harsh criticism

Well, pans are containers for "domestic use". What is domestic use though...kinda broad although some people would argue that domestic use equals cooking but I would argue the contrary. The definition of the word pan does not in any way specify that pans are objects with handles. If pans are only to be used for domestic usage involving cooking, then it would have made sense to specify the handle, since those purposes would require a handle to deal with the tempuratures associated with cooking. Can the word "ladle" be used to describe a cup? No, because a large part of the description of a ladle involves the handle. Since a handle is not specified as part of the definition of the word "pan", the word should be applicable for open containers involving domestic use that have very little or nothing to do with cooking. In fact, if garage mechanics can use a "pan" to catch motor oil when doing an oil change, I can at least use the word "pan" to describe a container of fish. Don't forget that pies are served in pie pans as well.

Good editorial catch though! Wow, it's like we have our own newsroom! Honestly, dish IS the better word to use in this case. But now we all know a little more about the true difference between dishes and pans.

Bad Educational Tool

Good eye Cathy! Didn't notice that the order of the planets was wrong too. I saw this table at another store near 99 Ranch as well. Who does QA for these products? There really should be more QA on stuff coming out from Taiwan and China. But then again, fobs from Asia just won't be as recognizable if they didn't wear shirts that say stuff like "Love you long time apple" or "Sweethard of You Long"...lol

Ipod Earbud Replaced

I got my Ipod earbuds replaced at the SF Apple store last week. Man, it took forever since it wasn't under the 14 day replacement policy. I had to use the 1-year warranty instead which meant I had to go through the "Genius Bar" people instead. They have so little modesty over there. "Genius Bar" my butt. I'll give them "Patience Bar" maybe since they have to talk people through using their Ipods and the like but start talking about networks and protocols, they start asking around for the real IT people. I've seen it happen. Anyways, I logged in, signed up for a slot and then waited for about an hour. Finally, I got them replaced. Hope this pair will last me longer than the other ones. I've even put on the foam pads since I now have tons of them.

Google Map API and Talk

I'm having a lot of fun playing around with the Google Map API at work and for my other projects. It's great that the time I spend working on it, means that I'm learning stuff that I can apply to my own stuff. Anyways, it's been frustrating but rewarding at the same time. I haven't tried Google Talk yet...it's competing with Skype (or as they say in Asia, Sky-P) but it doesn't seem to do as much as Trillian does.

Did I put this up already? I think I didn't. Anyways, we saw this really cool balloon at Party City in Saratoga when we were searching for balloons for Angela's graduation. Anyways, I needed to get a bunch of these pics off of my phone.

Bean gruel for breakfast at Emily's.

William took us for Korean a few International Friday day's ago. We went to Arang near Japantown.

Geez...Apple's biggest screen can show my website + the scratheradmin at the same time. Visual orgasm.

At Lion Market in Milpitas, I saw a table that was meant to be educational. Veranus, Nepune, Plnto...I need to review my astronomy.

This is a GREAT idea for a special keyboard...

Nice BR shirts

Sweet dinosaur eggs?

Visited the offices of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein for an Avaya demo. First time in a law firm...nice to see what it's all about. Cool lightnig in the lobby. LCHB has 5 floors (incl the top one) of one of the Embarcadero buildings. Awesome view.

I made my favorite steamed Mandarin fish for Emily and her family last week. It has varying outcomes but thankfully I did an alright job here. Emily likes stuff more salty though whereas I went with the sweet approach.

They even had a cool pan dish to put it in...it doesn't get used much though. I want a pan dish like this to make fish in.

Yes I've been trying to eat healthier...

At University Chicken in Santa Clara...hot wings are cheaper on Tuesdays...chicken strips on Thursdays. Personally I think the hot wings are messier than they need to be.

Greasy Greasy

Bored or just full?

We also ended up going to eat Shrimp Quesadillas at Dave and Busters on Friday. They were pretty good.

The BBQ Chicken and the Scallopini might look good but they were actually pretty dry.

I made emily wear the hat...the ears were her innovation. lol

Time Crisis 3...cool game but soooooo long

I'm really liking my Ipod Photo...love listening to Podcasts. Haven't really done much more hacking to it. No need really.

I like sitting on the last row of the bus because the engine warms my back...nice...

August 14, 2005 - 11:12PM - Vung Tau II / Cinema Saver / Coinstar / Mi Lindo Peru / Mitchell's / Rosewood / Music Store

Mmm mmm! Favourite Vietnamese place in Milpitas, Vung Tau II (the first one is in San Jose on E. Santa Clara St...that crispy cookie thing in the back is really good...it's like crispy won tons except this one has a shrimp in it. This is #22.

The lighting was sooo cool! I'm going to go around with an overhead lamp in the future...hehehe or a flashlight!

This is the theatre in Milpitas that Emily and I went to, the first time we met each other. We've been back a few times since then but since it's closing down at this location and moving, we went to see "Bewitched" at its final night. That shopping center reminds me of how that mall near Saratoga was like with all the empty spaces. Without the movie theatre there, what's the draw?

I keep all of my coins in two plastic bins. 1 for quarters and 1 for everything else. I got the bins at the El Dorado in Reno, NV. Every time I go to a casino, I pick up those plastic bins cause they're just so useful. It was getting full so off to Coinstar at the local Albertsons I went.

Holy Cow! My quarter bin is full too...last time I counted it was like $60 worth but quarters are just tons more useful so I'm going to keep those around. This is probably a year's worth of coins I think.

Went to Mi Lindo Peru or "My Beautiful Peru" with Margaret and Lih-Chern on Thursday. I had no idea that there were so many Peruvian places in the Mission district. Here we have anticuchos or Cow Heart. Nice and tender! :-P These are just small pieces of the heart, not the entire thing.

Chaufa - Peruvian version of Chinese Fried Rice...when Margaret and I were in Peru, we wanted to try out the Chifa (Chinese food) there but never got around to it. I dunno, there IS something different about this fried rice...I found it pretty tasty too.

Saltado de Camarones - Shrimp sauteed w/ onions, tomatoes & French Fries. Good stuff...

Pescado A Lo Macho - Fried red snapper covered w/ squid, clams, mussels & prawns. Sauce was exquisite over he Chaufa.

Seen on Mission on the way to Mitchell's...is it frikin good?

Mitchell's Ice Cream...got me a Strawberry Shake

Went to Rosewood Lounge for Nancy's Birthday on Friday.

Emily playing the cello at a music store in San Jose. We were there to help Angela look at violins.

Violins and Cellos...I picked up a couple cellos to play around with....mmm, I miss playing with people my own age.

August 9, 2005 - 5:10PM - Music Man / Ryowa / Universe Within / Grace Cathedral / Pier Market

Jelly Belly sent these for some reason...it's pretty cool

On Friday, Emily and I went to see Angela play the violin for a children's theatre production of "The Music Man". Never seen it before...it was certainly an interesting story with interesting morals.

They're stretching my jacket!!!

Yummy Ramen on Saturday...on Friday, we went to Jujubi (freakin monopoly on late night places...no reason for them to get better...) where Emily and Angela got the Ramen which was incredibly horrible. Bad soup as well as bad pork. My Tomato Shrimp was alright but not that great either. So so far...

Ryowa has has my favorite ramen. They stopped putting the kim chee mason jars out though.

SPECIAL FEATURE - The Universe Within @ The Masonic Center

Ok...we went to see "The Universe Within" in San Francisco on Sunday. I got "visual data" about the show but since I don't want to get sued, you'll have to answer a few questions to get access. Hopefully, this'll foil any webcrawlers plus any kids. Wouldn't want any parents calling me up saying I was distributing inappropriate material. That being said....BIG WARNING...some of the images are NOT suitable for young people. Even I was disturbed by it. For those of you who don't know what "The Universe Within" is about...go here.

integral(135 x^2 dx) = x^3
Andy was born in (country)

Grace Cathedral reminds me of the churches in France...no flying buttresses however.

Really steep hill although it doesn't really look like it...hehehe I remember how I brought a group of friends up a hill just like this one unnecessarily. Hehehehe good times.

Top of Cityscape...once again, its foggy.

Grace Cathedral

Hehehe...so we walked up the steps to see this door. I mentioned to Emily that it reminded me of the "Golden Door" on the Duomo in Florence. After I went home, I checked on the history of the Grace Cathedral door and found that it's a cast of the "Golden Door"!!! It's actually Lorenzo Ghiberti's "Gates of Paradise". I wish I spent more time in Florence. If you want to see pics of the one in Florence, go here.

Snazzy outfit

Lol...paparazzi shot...I collect these now

"San Francisco at Night" postcard. Totally untrue. This was at Coit Tower.

Busy Drawing...had dinner at Pier 39 at "Pier Market".

Doodling

View of the pier from the restaurant.

Emily's doodle

Angela's doodle

My doodle on top...Angela drew that "thing" on the bottom

hahahahahahah

I did this on Emily's menu

I like pepper on my clam chowder...crab cakes...pina colada

I did this on Angela's menu lol

Very bar-like interior

Cioppino...it was the best deal for the price but I felt that it could have been better. Fish/Mussels/Shrimp/Clams/Crab. Couldn't compare with the bouillabaisse at Left Bank.

Shrimp Combo...the best was the Fried Shrimp which tells you how bad the other ones are. That's like saying at a BBQ that the steak that was burnt/charred beyond recognition was the best thing there. Well not that bad but I love eating good quality stuff that aren't sauce-dependent. A good steak is a steak that doesn't need a sauce. Not that I don't like my A-1 but still...

Hehehe I brought an Ikea bib along (had breakfast at Ikea again with Lih-Chern...it's like our breakfast place!)...such good sports about me taking pictures.

My placement devolved into a mess...as you can clearly see Angela had some creepy stuff on her mind

August 3, 2005 - 11:00PM - Pho / Left Bank / Macy's

If the following captions are funny, they are penned by Emily. The boring ones are by me.

Friday International Day was Vietnamese food this week. This was the place that the week before I had gone with Margaret...good recommendation because everyone really enjoyed their meal. The stench outside was something incredible though (like a baby's butt).

Meg's Dry Noodle stuff...it looked really good. Sorry about the focus...I was running out of batteries.

My Pho Bowl

Left Bank in Santana Row in San Jose. (Edit: I was funny that night...inside joke)

Nice decorations...very nice white fluffy hats

Here we have the Mussels (which comes with Fries...something that I didn't realize which meant that I got 2 orders of fries), a Mojito, and bread. The bread by itself was cold, hard, and bland. Probably close to what they serve in the "correction facilities." It came in very useful to sop up the mussel broth though. Total carb overload, but the bread became reallty good with the salty, buttery broth.

Bouillabaisse with a yummy Spinach Side...I totally loved this soup. So much flavor...really really good.

Monkfish...this fish was really fresh. Emily regretted sharing half with me tho. *sniff* She claims it was much yummier than my fish stew. *pffft* She doesn't have the "God of Cookery" tongue that I have.

Sushi from Koreana

Shoes!!! It's amazing how women's eagle eyes can actually understand and navigate through such a sight.

The Marc Jacob shoes that Emily saw in the winter season of last year on a mannequin and instantaneously became a believer of love at first sight. She managed to control her drooling over the shoes pretty well this time, probably because I was right there. She loves them, but just can't walk in them. Pretty expensive too. Yikes, regular price was enough for a 60GB color iPod and a trio of backup earbuds.

Emily is stylin...needs to work on her "I'm too sexy for the catwalk" stance though, and definitely her model's pout.

Look! They put a skirt on a handbag! LOL, how can anyone be caught dead with such a fashion crime on them? And to own it one must first deflate the wallet. It looks like a kid's bag, but they actually included a grown-up dust bag with it. Top it off with a lollipop in the other hand, and the carrier of this bag should be able to pass for "Kids 12 and Under" discounts.

Afterwards, we went to Mark's bonfire party. I hadn't seen Mark or Richard in a long time and it was nice seeing old faces. Funny that both Emily and I knew Mark. I think/know more than a few guys were hoping/thinking/expecting Emily to arrive unattached. Good thing it was cold so it gave me an excuse to hug her hahahahahahaha...anyways, after I met a few more of Emily's friends, we skipped out of there. Kinda boring although someone had the audacity/mindset/vision to setup a DDR-clone on the beach. Basically a laptop version with the pad on the sand.
