December 25th 2006 - 11:53PM - Quick update...

Merry Christmas!!! I'm down in SoCal back at home visiting family...trying to get back and up to speed with updates. Seems a little hopeless but I'll persevere.

For one of Sassy's many going away get togethers (there must have been at least 5 of those), we went to a place on Embarcadero at one of the piers. There was fog so it created some interesting backdrops.

The digital photography age certainly makes things easier...

Jose is a Professional Camera Handler...he recently got himself a XTi which I've played around a bit with. Best part has to the the 9 point AF.

Too bad it's not in focus but I like this shot all the same. Sassy is such a fun individual to hang around with, it's a shame she's going back to Germany, the land of very little kimchee. barley/corn tea. Well, if I'm ever in Hamburg!

Marjo Marjo Marjo...she finally got engaged on her trip to Japan. Congrats!

Proof that I wasn't kidding around about flag football...it's not like I bruise easily either...this just wasn't an ordinary game of flag football.

This is what Emily considers a breakfast...for me, that's breakfast + lunch.

I've been looking for glassware to cook food in since I don't want to cook too often using stuff that might bubble such as nonstick pans/pots. It's especially unsafe at high temps. Even though some of the top chefs have been using non-sticks as opposed to traditional pans, they end up throwing them out several times a year (they did an informal poll of chefs in SF). That's not something that ordinary people do. So for really hot temps, I'm using this...my mom had a pot made by Corning but they don't make them anymore. So I've been looking for the past 2 years at places like Mikasa and everywhere...finally found it and it's a French import. Really happy with it. It's not as easy to clean but you feel a lot better about the food you're serving.

Emily's friend made these for Halloween...that's a spider (the arms are pretzel sticks) and an eye for those unimaginative ones.

December 18th 2006 - 7:10AM - Six Flags Marine World

My Aunt Jackie gave Emily and me free tickets to go to Six Flags Marine World. I'd never been before so it was a great opportunity. This was while the whole Halloween thing was going down. The scary stuff wasn't as scary as Six Flags and the rollercoasters were alright but what was really cool was the butterfly habitat that they have. This Six Flags was actually bunch of other failed amusement parks put together (a marine one and then a zoo one) to create the current one. It was really incredible getting so close to these creatures. At times my camera was only about 6 inches from them.

This one had an amazing wingspan...probably about 10-11 inches across

So pretty...

This one was really ugly on the bottom but the top had this beautifully bright iridescent blue.

Look at those eyes!!!

This one couldn't settle on a particular color.

This curious giraffe was wondering if I had any treats.

Tigers swim...I saw it in person.

That is pretty freaky.

This elephant is also asking for food...what is up with this park? :-P

Try as they might, all those people (plus 30 more out of frame) couldn't stop an elephant from moving forward.

I think 'possums are cute.

Emily participated in a hypnotist show. Suffice to say, she's not easily hypnotized/persuaded. Although the guy next to her had this horrible stench going on, so that might have what was affecting the process.

Some were too easily hypnotized...

Hmm, perhaps the hypnotist instead instructed Emily to ask me buy a Bugs Bunny hat for her....hmmm....at the time, she said she'd wear it at the mall...but she hasn't yet. Perhaps the hypnosis wore off. :-D

December 18th 2006 - 7:00AM - Mac Thoughts

After having my MBP (MacBook Pro for those not in the know...hey that rhymes!) for a few weeks now, I have a few thoughts...

I really should have a page detailing what I've installed on my machine. Everything is grouped together quite nicely in my applications folder so it wouldn't be too difficult.

December 15th 2006 - 8:40AM - Flag Football

Played Flag Football with Chris and Jessie for the first time since I played in a parking lot back in freshman year at Cal. That was a looooong time ago. I ended up seriously messing myself up and being pretty much unable to walk for a few days afterwards. At one point, I had to decide how to maximize benefits from walking (more like shuffling really) around. Should I go to the medicine cabinet first or take a shower first? It wasn't so much being out of shape but being knocked around so much...sore everywhere. I don't know how I got picked to be one of the offensive lineman. The guy that I was matched up against outweighed me by at least 70 lbs. Clashing with him was like hitting a freight train again and again. I think I did pretty well though and never let him into the pocket. When I went on offense though, I did manage to pull a couple QB sacks by faking him out. This was also the first time I used my 70-200mm in a sport setting...it was fun. While I played though, Lori was the one taking the pictures. :-D

December 15th 2006 - 8:22AM - Emily's Birthday

For Emily's birthday (which was back in October...I'm REALLY backed up now), we went to an Moroccan restaurant called Menara in San Jose. It had been awhile since I had been to a belly-dancing place. You eat with your fingers so you need to wash your hands beforehand!

Menara
41 East Gish Road
San Jose, California 95112
(408) 453-1983

I have no idea what the name of this drink is but they recommended it...it was kinda like a Cosmo...not bad...light on the liquor though.

At Menara, you order 1 of 5 specific dinners which everyone shares. The prices are per person. We ended up ordering the Rabbit Dinner. The first course was a Salade Moroccaines (Moroccan Salad)...I was a bit busy taking pictures and wasn't able to eat much of this...but I remember dipping bread into it and it was pretty good. I have no idea what is in it though...it just had a very spicy flavor.

The bread came in this basket which looked like it hadn't been washed since Bogart was in Morocco.

B'stilla (Boneless Chicken Pastry)...despite this admonition, I was divided on this one...it was interesting because it was sweet but I think that the nuts were a distraction. In my mind, meat and nuts just don't go together very well.

Belly dancers!!! At this restaurant, they went around the place unlike the other belly dancers I've seen who usually just belly dance on a raised platform or in the middle.

Why does this look like a frat house party? Adam and Ted get jiggy wit it. lol

Tajine de Lapin Paprika (Hare with Paprika)...hmm, now this was GREAT! Loved the sauce which was great for dipping...

No this was not awkward...not at all...

Angela enjoys her rabbit spine!

The second performance was a group of 4 amateur belly dancers. The one on the left, I dubbed Ms. Stoneface. No expression whatsoever.

Tajine D'Agneau Gamama (Lamb with Onions)...I liked this too! The meat almost had a creamy texture to it! Not as good for dipping but the meat was seriously "off the bone".

Couscous aux Legumes (Vegetable Couscous)...this counts as a dish? bah...

Is Ted sure? Oh yes, he's very sure.

Girl on girl action! lol j/k

Dessert Thé a la Menthe (Mint Tea)...ehhh the Chinese Tea Pourers that I saw in Chengdu are much more impressive. They "high pour" tea while doing all sorts of kung fu/acrobatic poses. This guy is a poser.

Some kind of dessert...I think I had half and it wasn't that great...

Happy Birthday Emily!

This lamp is tres cool!

December 6th 2006 - 7:10PM - Nifty Mac

Some thoughts about my MBP...I've did a little homework beforehand so after I got it, I went ahead and installed a bunch of things I had written down. Here's a list and what I think about them...

That's it for the nifty utilities...I installed Firefox, Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator, VLC on it of course however I didn't install Office on it...It just doesn't seem right...I'll probably go with OpenOffice or something instead. If anyone knows of good applications I should get (text/code editors, note takers), give me a shout. I found some interesting HDR stuff and I'll need to see how fast Aperture is compared to ACDSee (no Mac version). What I really want is a fast JPG/RAW image browser...the faster the better. I'm also pretty excited about the Theme stuff in iDVD...it's perfect to create a DVD of our trip to Washington DC in. I wonder if there are themes in Final Cut Pro. I don't think I have all the time to learn Final Cut though...something easy seems better for me.

Oh and the MBP isn't my first Apple computer. In fact, my first computer was an Apple IIc. We had the color monitor actually.

My next Apple was the Apple eMate...it was a laptop made for students that used the Newton operating system...it still works! Actually, this started the whole iMac translucent stuff.

December 6th 2006 - 7:10AM - Thoughts

Just wanted to put a couple thoughts down...

I'm not afraid to admit it...I do some racial profiling...ask any Asian you're close to and they'll say the same thing, trust me. Here's an example...on the way back home from SF (where I work), I take the rapid rail around here called BART. There's always a line when I get there which queues up in front of the doors of each section of the train. I tend to look for lines with more white people. Why? Because the city that I live in now has a huge Indian-subcontinent population. I find that I have a better chance of moving up in the line if there are white people in it since white people tend to take other trains. Call it what you want but this tactic helps me get a seat on BART during rush hour.

As a matter of rule, women shouldn't use their Victoria Secret shopping bags as lunch bags. They may be pink and all, but goodness sakes, it's totally inappropriate. If you're Gisele or Adriana (see how I'm on a first name basis here?) though, by all means, carry the bag. If not, don't. See how I made it simple? I don't seem to mind when I see old people in VS...when they make purchases, that's fine too...the bag is merely a means of conveying the goods from store to home. But when you start using them as lunch bags (AND BRING THEM TO WORK), that's another statement entirely.

I take off my watch when I use my new laptop...the protective film I ordered hasn't come in yet either.

My Fantasy Football season has fallen apart due to the injuries to Hasselbeck and Colston. Barber's less than steller numbers have really hurt this year too. You know what makes LT great? The fact that he doesn't get injured. AND he has great hands, but mainly that.

I heard a story about pigeons on NPR and now have a newfound respect for those birds. Love NPR.

December 5th 2006 - 7:10AM - Oy

That was the longest break from blogging I've had for awhile now...sorry about that! Anyways, we've been back from DC for a week now. Had a lot of fun AND took TONS of pics...no album yet but to try and make up for it, here's a link to my ultra-secret rss staging area where I put all my albums before I put captions on them...enjoy!

RSS Gallery Link...coded it per my needs for this website...works pretty well actually since I added some neat features...

Anyways, I also got myself a Powerbook Pro...or as Mac-philes would know it, a 15" MBP 2.33 C2D 160GB/2GB/256MB...this should last me for at least as long as my trusty Vaio (2nd one) did -> 2 yrs. It wasn't as trusty anymore due to a failing battery and crashing OS.
