American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME)

My name is Marlan Maralit and I am a Recruiter with the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), an organization that has more than 1.4 million members across the country and is the nation's largest and fastest growing public service employees union.

We have a number of exciting paid internship and employment opportunities available for sophomore, junior and senior level students who are committed to social and economic justice and are interested in gaining hands-on experience in helping primarily low-wage women and people of color gain rights on the job, and win better wages, benefits, and working conditions.

* UNION SPRING BREAK, an alternative spring break for juniors and seniors, March 26-31.

* AFSCME/UNCF Union Scholars Program, a 10-week summer internship program.

* AFSCME Organizer-In-Training Program, a year-long organizer training program.

I will be on campus next week from Thursday, March 2nd - Friday, March 10th to speak to students about the UNION SPRING BREAK program and other opportunities. In my experience, conducting a brief 10-15 minute presentation during one your meeting is one of the best ways to find talented and committed students who may be interested in the programs described below. Would it be possible to visit one of your meetings or events while I am on campus?

If you know any students, in particular juniors and seniors, who may be interested in these opportunities, please feel free to send me their contact information or forward this information to them. I will contact you over the next few days to follow up on my request to conduct a presentation in your class.  In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me at 703-309-9709 or mmaralit@afscme.org with any questions.  Thank you in advance for your help!

In solidarity,

Marlan Maralit

FULL PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

Union Spring Break, an alternative spring break, is a program for students interested in learning about the labor movement and the work of union organizing. Participants in northern California will be working with United Child Care Union, AFSCME, for five days of intensive classroom and field training. UCCU is the only union in the country just for child care. Program participants will be provided with lodging and transportation during the week as well as a $150 stipend for food.  Students are responsible for providing their own transportation to the campaign site, although travel scholarships are available. Open to seniors and juniors only. For more information and to apply, visit www.unionspringbreak.com.  The deadline for applications is February 28, 2006. (DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED)

The UNCF/AFSCME Union Scholars Program, a summer internship program, provides students of color with an opportunity to work on the front lines of the labor movement. Students will participate in a variety of activities that may include helping non-union workers organize a union at their job, building AFSCME's grassroots political program or conducting research and devising strategic plans for organizing campaigns.  The best part of this program is that students have a chance to make a real difference in people's lives.  The 8-10 week internship provides a stipend of $4000, on-site housing, and an opportunity to attend a week-long orientation and training at Harvard University. In addition, participants who successfully complete their internship are eligible to receive a scholarship of up to $5000 per year when they return to school. Open to sophomores and juniors of color only. For more information and to apply, visit www.uncf.org and look under the section pertaining to internships. A description of the UNCF/AFSCME program is at the top of the list on the left-hand side.  The deadline for applications is February 27, 2006.

The AFSCME Organizer-in-Training program is an intensive year-long program during which new organizers learn the fundamentals of union organizing. Organizers-in-Training come from diverse backgrounds of work, organizing and academic experience. Trainees are placed on campaigns with experienced Lead Organizers who provide mentoring and one-on-one training throughout the program. Organizers-in-Training learn the nuts and bolts of an organizing campaign from home calling unorganized workers to coordinating direct actions to preparing workers for a first union contract campaign. Salary starts at $33,216 with free single or family health coverage, car allowance, 12 paid holidays, 401k, pension plan, and more. Women and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply. Open to graduating seniors only. For more information and to apply, visit  www.afscmeorganizers.org.
