VOTER MOBILIZATION COORDINATOR

Description: The Asian Pacific American Legal Center
(APALC) was
established in 1983 with broad-based support and has
become the leading
organization in the region dedicated to
providing the diverse Asian
Pacific American community with civil
rights advocacy and multilingual,
culturally-sensitive legal
services and education.
Position Summary: This
is a new position in APALC's Voting Rights
Project, helping launch
a groundbreaking effort to reach and mobilize
Asian American
voters in Los Angeles County during the June and November
2006
elections. The Voter Mobilization Coordinator will support
a voter
mobilization network comprised of local Asian American
community
organizations and will have primary responsibility for
recruiting and
coordinating volunteers for voter outreach,
including a phone bank. The
Coordinator will work under
the supervision of the Voting Rights Project
Staff Attorney. This
temporary position is available immediately and
will end on
November 17, 2006.
Responsibilities and
Duties:
* Assist Voting
Rights Project Staff Attorney in managing the
voter mobilization
network, including maintaining communications with
partner
organizations;
* Recruit and
coordinate volunteers, including making
presentations throughout
the county, for both June and November 2006
voter activities
including phone banks, poll monitoring and exit
polling;
*
Train and supervise volunteers participating in June and
November
phone banks;
* Oversee daily
operations of phone banks, scheduled to run for
four weeks in each
election, including all necessary preparations to
launch the
phone banks; and
* Provide
administrative support as needed, including handling
stipends for
volunteers.
Qualifications:
*
Demonstrated volunteer recruitment and supervision skills;
*
Demonstrated project management skills;
*
Excellent oral and written communication skills,
including
presentation skills;
*
Strong computer skills;
* Must
be self-directed, motivated, and comfortable working
independently;
* Ability
to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends,
especially
during May and October 2006;
*
Valid driver's license, liability insurance, and access to
an
automobile or alternative means of transportation;
*
Ties and contacts in the Southern Californian Asian
American
community preferred;
*
Experience or interest in civil rights or immigrant rights
issues
preferred; and
* Bilingual
ability in an Asian language helpful.
Compensation: $14-16/hour
(DOE, plus bilingual supplement). Benefits
include
medical, dental, vision and retirement
package. Parking
provided.
