The internships are through the Berkeley Chapter of the national, non-profit, non-government Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW). ESW is dedicated to the empowerment of under-served communities world-wide through the development of sustainable interventions that address technology-related problems. Please visit www.ce.berkeley.edu/~esw and www.esustainableworld.org for more information.
The Project in Brief:
The 170,000 residents of the Behram Slum in Mumbai, India, suffer from illness caused by consumption of sewage-contaminated drinking water. In response to this, a multidisciplinary and multinational team has been working in Berkeley and India for the past two years developing and implementing a comprehensive education program and low-cost, point-of-use water treatment systems. Our approach to this project is unique and successful by encouraging Behrampada community participation as much as possible, by developing a technology that is environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable, by insisting on the integration of the education with the filter technology, and by slowly transitioning the project management to many levels of Mumbain stakeholders. Work planned for this spring and summer includes starting a profitable filter building business in Behrampada, expanding the education program and starting a community resource center, and developing an epidemiological study on the effectiveness of the education and technology interventions.
We look forward to receiving your application. Please e-mail any inquiries to eswbindia@lists.berkeley.edu . Namaste!
Cheers,
Erin Inglish and Ashley Murray
