represent. Campaign Kickoff

The kickoff is meant to be a social gathering for students and community members. It should take place off the campus of UC Berkeley so that we make the initial effort to get off campus and into the community. Ideally the event will feel like a social picnic, however it differs from similar programs on campus in that there will be a driving theme throughout the afternoon. It will serve as a grounds for individuals to express their opinions on Black issues and solidarity through: open microphone, the represent graffiti wall, poetry, speech, step performances and more. The non-structured activities will include basketball, football, jump-rope, and music and games. This event should have the feel of a community gathering/rally.

Black Women's Appreciation

The annual Black Women’s Appreciation Night has been known as a very classy and elegant event for many years at UC Berkeley. It is a time when women on campus get a chance to showcase what truly makes them unique. In order to accomplish the mature and sensual atmosphere that we desire, candles, elegant decorations, and flowers are typically used. Recently the program has developed into a sit-down dinner, with a live Jazz ensemble performing and Neo Soul music played throughout the evening. In addition, awards and certificates are given to women throughout the program in an effort to acknowledge and appreciate them. This year we are collaborating with the brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi, Gamma Alpha Chapter here at UC Berkeley, which should make for a truly unique event.

Brother's Breakfast

The Brother’s Breakfast is a program catered to, but not limited to African American males on UC Berkeley’s campus. The Brothers Breakfast is an opportunity created to address as well as alleviate issues affecting Black men. Furthermore, it serves as a venue where Men from all walks of life can meet, fellowship, and to build lasting bonds to push forth in our daily endeavors. This environment is captured through ice breakers, workshops, a guest speaker, and a breakfast that nourishes the soul. The Theme of this year’s breakfast is "Lifting as we climb." The purpose is to encourage males in higher education to reach back into their communities and help other young men achieve, similar to the way we were supported throughout our journey into higher education.

Youth Conference

The Saving Our Inner City Youth Conference (SO-ICY) is focused on providing positive influence and guidance to nearly 150 Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond school males. The program will attempt focus on four main areas: college awareness, sexual awareness/teen pregnancy prevention, and career guidance, and sports in higher education. The program will educate the young males on the college requirements, application processes, how to select colleges, and ways to obtain financial assistance. Sexual awareness/teen pregnancy prevention, will inform the students on healthy sexual practice tips as well as ways to prevent early pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. A Career guidance panel will offer both the high school students and collegiate members of Alpha an opportunity to learn more about careers through a panel discussion of alumni brothers in various professional fields. Lastly, volunteer athletes at Cal will lead a panel, discussing the importance of a strong academic background as well as the good, bad, bad ugly of college athletics. Moreover, the overarching goal for this community service project is to provide the participating young men with an opportunity to improve their lives by learning more about the pathways to personal success. By addressing issues of educational development, sex, and future planning, we intend to successfully guide these young males down a more positive and hopefully successful path in life.

AE Boyz Club @ KIPP Middle School

The Brothers of Alpha Epsilon chapter developed, coordinated, and facilitated two twelve-week rights of passage programs with 12-15 young men at KIPP Middle located in West Oakland. The Brothers led seminars, experiences and projects to develop middle school students in regards to higher education, self-respect, responsibility and success.

Divine Service

Divine Service is a community service partnership with Alpha Epsilon’s home church Covenant Worship Center. At this community service event the Brothers assist Covenant Worship Center’s feeding ministry serve over 50 individuals a meal that’s nourishes their bodies and a spiritual word that nourishes the heart and soul.

Golden Real

The Golden Real is a cinematic experience brought to you by the represent. campaign. The program will recreate the experience of a night at the movies by bringing student films to the big screen!  The content of the student-films will aim to dissect a particular issue or give an account of an experience while providing some momentum towards forming
solutions.

Just My Brother and Me

Just My Brother and Me is a weekend designed to target a group of young Black boys from KIPP Bridge Middle School in Oakland and expose them to life as a UC Berkeley student. The program lasts for 3 days. Friday night will be focused on breaking the ice between the students and the mentors as well as having a good time in fellowship. Saturday the boys will participate in BRRC Day, an annual event thrown by the Black Recruitment and Retention Center at UC Berkeley. The event will conclude with a worship service on Sunday morning. By the end of the program, the boys should realize that there is a group of men that care for them and that they have a wealth of options for their future.

Solidarity Sunday: It's a Family Affair

Solidarity Sunday is an annual event thrown by the African American Student Development Office. This year we will be working with them to turn the annual picnic into more of a “Black Family Day” at UC Berkeley. The goal is to make the event feel like a family reunion. There will be barbequed hot dogs and hamburgers, snacks, and cold beverages. There will also be competitive games and fun activities for the kids as well as the adults (i.e. jumpers and sack races for the kids and card games for the adults). Music will be continuously played, with the exception of a few live performances from various Black student groups. Black organizations will also be permitted to set up tables so that the visitors can learn more about CAL’s Black student groups as well as other local Black businesses.
