Hello world! This, of course, is the Math Blog of Despair, a way of blowing-off hot air...and spewing-out a lot of stale air. Studying math in grad school has been as enjoyable as holding your breath while sprinting. Somewhere along the way the inspiration has died. This blog is dedicated to reviving the spark.

Math is used everywhere, and it is also called a universal language, though it doesn't necessarily have a universally understood notation. Not only in business-related fields and science (even biology) is math found, but even in art. So let me apologize in advance if I sound naive when I say "what good is math"? I know it's used in many different fields...beyond that I can't speak much more to it though.

The question for me is: why become a mathematician? English is used everywhere in my society, probably more than math! But you don't see everyone writing-in "English degree" on their resume. As human beings, where and when do we go from using something, to becoming a student of it? And why?

What does math mean to me? Does it have significance for me? Can I make it meaningful and significant for someone else?
