Magnepan

Magnepan has been manufacturing speakers for over 35 years since Jim Winey, the inventor of the Magneplanar loudspeakers, first owned electrostatic loudspeakers and began the process of experimenting to design an improved electrostat. In 1969, Jim invented the Magneplanar, a thin-film magnetic equivalent to the electrostat and started the company Magnepan. Awards garnered include The Absolute Sound Best Buy 2002, The Absolute Sound Golden Ear Award 1999, and The Absolute Sound Overall Product of the Year 2003. Design Principles

Magnepan manufactures two different kinds of proprietary drivers: true ribbon tweeters with response beyond 20kHz and planar-magnetic/quasi-ribbon midrange and bass drivers.
The planar-magnetic driver is like a series of dynamic drivers that fire along a vertical axis, creating a planar transducer.
Dipole radiation pattern, directional sound.
Best paired with stronger amplifiers capable of driving 4 ohm loads comfortably.
