Indeterminism can be viewed as the opposite of determinism. Indeterminists do not believe in cause-and-effect. This allows them to have chance and freedom. It also allows them to have regret. This is an argument that indeterminists like to use against determinists, since a world without regret is a sad world. But, as with all philosophical ideas, there is a flaw to indeterminism. That is the elimination of cause-and-effect. What this means that there are only effects, no causes. So if you slap someone, it is not your fault, it just happened. This takes away people's responsibility since you didn't do the slapping, it just happened. The other problem is that no one can name an uncaused event in history. Think about it, everything was caused by something else. This is the largest blow to indeterminism, and the main reason that most people do not accept this belief. |
