Man is constantly striving forward in his thirst for advancement. The drive for technology has been with man since his inception. Moving from the stone age to the bronze age, man's destiny for improving his devices was set. But was it for man's best interest?

Look at us. We are at our most technologically advanced. But at what price? We have a hole in the ozone layer. The globe is warming up. countless species are extinct because of man. We have the atomic bomb. For what? So that we can have something like hairspray? To have the Cold War? Technology has not been all helpful. Just look at the machine gun.

The machine gun was introduced into war during World War I. That is what introduced trench warfare. this type of warfare upped the ante in death tole and in the hardships that soldiers had to endure. It was not a great technological leap for man. World War I also introduced poisonous gas, such as mustard gas. Technology did not help there, either.

But what about all the good technology? What about all the medical technology? Well, some of it is great. but it has also lead to more technology on how to kill people. It also is not evenly given to everyone in the world, so it does not benefit all, while the evil application of that technology affects everyone. And you can read my rant on the de-evolution of man to see another example of how all of this medical technology is not necesarily good.

And don't even start on how technology has supposedly improved our lives. It has been shown that we do not really get more done in a day because of our technology. Some studies have implicated that technology actually takes away one's time.

Technology has also not helped business. When a new technology first comes out, it might help for a little while, but then everyone else gets the technology and the lead then disapears. Back to square one.

But there are still those rare inventions by man that just help negate all those wrongs. the car and airplane. the phone. but one of the most recent pieces of technology that has improved man is something you are using this instant. The Internet.

it has helped tear down barriers across the world. It has given people a voice that they never would have had, such as myself. It has allowed cultural barriers to be knocked down. The Internet is a good thing.

so what does all of this mean? that technology often seems like two steps forward with one step back. But at least we have that extra step. technology is not always as grand as we think. We could perhaps up the number of forward steps or lower the number of back steps if we could just be more careful with what technology we develop. If we ended with this blind drive of moving forward we could speed up the improvement of man. We can only hope.
