Ben Bellows is a third-year epidemiology doctoral student assessing social and economic determinants of health outcomes and service utilization under
alternative health financing strategies for reproductive health and STD treatment services in East Africa. Mr. Bellows graduated with a BA in economics
and history from the University of Michigan 1996. He served in the US Peace Corps in Ecuador 1997-2000. Following service, he worked at the US Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention for several years to develop training programs for HIV counseling and testing with national government partners in Kenya,
Uganda, Zambia, and Namibia. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley’s MPH program in 2004. His current doctoral work is with the
German Development Bank (KfW), the Kenyan National Coordinating Agency on Population and Development (NCAPD), the Uganda Ministry of Health, and Mbarara
University of Science and Technology, Uganda.
Mr. Bellows serves on the board of the Northern California Peace Corps Association and as Vice-President of
Friends of Ecuador, a 501c3 dedicated to continuing the spirit of Peace Corps service in Ecuador. Mr. Bellows
also blogs periodically at Politics and Policy of HIV/AIDS.
