Submission Guidelines

The Berkeley Fiction Review is a forum for short fiction, published biannually. We invite submissions of previously unpublished short stories with these guidelines in mind:

• Submissions should be typed, double-spaced, using a normal font size and type (12 point, Courier, Times, New York, Palatino).
• Please send submissions in a manilla envelope (or something similar, approximately 8 1/2" x 11"). Please do NOT send submissions in #10 (standard business-size) envelopes.
• Anything longer than 25 pages becomes difficult to consider due to space limitations; we try to publish between 10-15 stories each issue.
• Include your name, address, and phone number on the first page of the story.
• Include a regular SASE for a reply or an envelope (9x12) with sufficient postage if you would like us to return your manuscript. We sometimes offer comments or suggestions on returned manuscripts, time permitting.
• Cover letters should be brief; include your address, email address, phone number, and the title of the story. Please do not summarize the story. Let the work speak for itself.
• Simultaneous submissions are welcome, but should be marked as such.

Since our staff is composed solely of student volunteers, our response time can be as long as six months to a year, but we are making every effort to decrease this time interval. Our payment is one contributor's copy.

Potential contributors are strongly encouraged to purchase and examine copies of the Berkeley Fiction Review before submitting work, primarily to get a feel for what types of work we publish and therefore of what kinds of submissions might be appropriate. Also, because magazines such as the Berkeley Fiction Review depend on a loyal and supportive readership in order to continue publication, we would appreciate your support as a reader and would hope that you would enjoy reading the work of new and emerging writers. Our most recent issue, Issue #26, is $10.00; back issues are $8.50. This includes shipping and handling.
