Greetings and Welcome Back to BookWorlds!

Wouldn't it be amazing if Cal offered classes on entire genres that are overlooked in typical lit classes despite their prevalence in so many students' lives?  Namely, the sci-fi and fantasy genres. Well, that's where BookWorlds comes in.
BookWorlds was established to expose students to the world of fantasy and science fiction through the reading and discussion of novels that, quite simply, take place in worlds apart from our own. Originally beginning with Tolkien's epic Lord of the Rings, BookWorlds has offered classes from Ender's Game to Harry Potter, from CS Lewis to Douglas Adams...

Classes vary each semester, depending on what students want to teach. So that means you -- yes, you! -- could be just like any other student in an Elvish class this semester, but come the next one, you could be teaching it, or perhaps LOTR, Star Wars, or even a Dystopia-themed class. So keep checking out this site for updates on upcoming meetings, events, and announcements so you won't miss the chance to delve into another world!!

Welcome to Bookworlds: Where in the worlds have you been?

  General Discussion First Planning Meeting

Recap of the 10/05/08 Planning meeting is as follows:

All of you who didn't show up...you stink!
But, on the plus side, we've got a whole bunch of new potential facilitators who just need a little help in order to get started.

Courses that are definitely being taught next semester:
Harry Potter (Jesus, Marize, JonathanMa)
HOME (Kevin, Juliana)
Dragons (Jeff, Suzie, Chrysann)
Favorites (Nicole)
Coming of Age/Hero's Journey (Charlene, Faye, Marize)

Courses that are definitely going to being taught, but need additional facilitator help:
Lord of the Rings: A Comparison of the Books and the Films
Isaac Asimov's (and others) Robots

Courses that will be taught if additional facilitator help can be found:
Ender's Shadow
Discworld
Intro to Comics
Tamora Pierce
Neil Gaiman
Mythology
Vampires vs Werewolves (topic subject to change)

So, if you're interested in teaching next semester, and/or are willing to help out with any of these classes, be sure to email bookworldsthain@yahoo.com.

Department deadlines are really early this semester, so get started on your syllabi now!

  FIRST PLANNING MEETING: 10/5

Hello one Hello all!
Time to get those thinking wands at the ready, because we are having the first BookWorlds planning meeting next SUNDAY, OCTOBER 5th, at 1:00 PM in 182 DWINELLE

Some of the department deadlines for submitting decals are fast approaching (as early as October 8th) so the sooner we head GET the ball rollin' on classes, the better.
So, whether you know precisely what you want to do and who to teach it with, or if you're just generally interested in teaching a class, COME to the meeting so we can bandy about ideas and start sorting them out.

If you seeeeeeeriously cannot make it though, no worries.  Email bookworldsthain@yahoo.com (preferably before the meeting) with what you're interested in teaching, and we will keep that noted/set you up with other facilitators if necessary and so on.

See you next Sunday! (the 5th! Don't forget!)

General Discussion I think it's working now....?

Hey guys,
So the glorious Ms. Marize and I somehow convinced the powers that be that we do in fact know what we are doing; as a result we now have a website back!! (For how long, I do not know...)

Hopefully updates will be made in all sections soon.  But at the same time, I am sending out a plea to all the inhabitants of BookWorlds:
Does anyone have a fairly decent working knowledge of the super duper role of web-mastery?  Most important is the knowledge of maintaining a forum (created with phpbb to those familiar with this), because we have 2 options:
1. someone can at least help in updating the versions of certain programs used, and thereby nixing the presence of infiltrating spam, OR
2. you can leave me to it to try and figure this out some more.  Which might work out, but might result in a disabled website... again.  and again.

So what of it, folks, who wants the awesome title of BookWorlds Webmaster Extraordinaire?

Update:  For now, the Forums are down. But I don't think anyone was planning to use them right now anyway.

  General Discussion Updated Forums!!

So, take a looksie and you will find that the Fall 2008 Forums have been added-- class facilitators can now utilize them as they see fit!!!
Try your best to ignore the misfortune that has befallen the "General Discussion" Forum though--it has been ransacked by spammers galore. I am trying to delete it, but... there may be too many to the point that the system geos nuts on me.... So, just avoid it. At all costs. Your livelihood may depend on it.... probably not, but you never know.

If facilitators would prefer to "moderate" their forums, let me know (me being Alya -- temporary webmaster who really hasn't a clue what she's doing, but it's a vast improvement from nothing, I suppose). When i say "Let me know," that requires giving me your User ID (can email it, or maybe leave a comment on this thingy, that will suffice). I doubt many will ask, but if you do....

Righto, well off you go now.

UPDATE:  I had to delete the new forums for a moment, because they are as well being consumed by spammers.  They'll be back up in a day or two though... if someone is savvy with this type of stuff, do enlighten me on the easiest way to ban spammers/protect the forums.  I'm figuring this out as I go along, so... we'll see how it goes.

  General Discussion Forum/Registration Woes

Some of you may have noticed crazy problems with new user registration and possibly posting to the Forums. That should all be fixed now. If it's not, go ahead and let me know.

UPDATE:

Turns out I was wrong, and basically nobody (except us magically special Moderators) could post to the forums.  I can't figure out why, but I'm sure the reason was retarded.

Anyway, I think I've fixed that for the time being.  I'm afraid it may not be the best fix ever, but it seems to work.

  Courses Another Change of Hobbit

So I was just down at Another Change of Hobbit, to check on when they might be getting my books.  I was told that the books should arrive on Friday - and the way he said it suggested that he meant in general, for all BookWorlds classes.  Just thought I would share that with you, because now you know.  And knowing is half the battle.

General Discussion Hoo ah! (welcome welcome)

Welcome one and all the another semester with BookWorlds.  It seems that all of our classes are cleared for launch and ready to go.  Descriptions of nearly every class we offer can be found under the Content section, as can short bios and contact info for most of our Instructors.  Everything else is still operational and in full swing, including the Forums and Download section.

If you are experiencing slow load times or any sort of lag, I apologize.  I can only assume it's the OCF website experiencing some sort of crazy load, what with it being the first week of school and all.

And to all you Instructors: if you don't see your info or course stuff online, it's because I never got it.  Everything I've received is there.  So blame the internet, not me, if somethings missing.

Here's hoping for a totally kick-ass semester for all!

  Holy Crap!

Wow. So, I have no idea what just happened, but anybody logging on to the Forums in the next little while is going to be face to face with what could very possibly be the first tendrils of probing alien code. But fear not, loyal citizens, I shall combat it to the best of my ability.

Update:
Ok, so that's done now.  If you saw what I was talking about, you were probably as scared as I was.  If not... consider yourself lucky. But the forums are updated as well, and, I assume, better somehow..?

  Instructors and Course Info

Hope things are panning out smoothly for everyone.

Course Descriptions and Instructor Info should now be online. More Instructor bios will be added as they trickle in. Pictures will be up as soon as I sort out how (again... retardation strikes with a vengeance!).

And Dana Anna responded almost instantly, providing the website with the sexy new logo you see above.

Huzzah!

Update:
I'm an idiot, and credited the wrong person!  D'oh!  Anna is the one responsible for our sexy new logo.  Sorry Dana.
