TWO DAYS
Fertilization has occurred! The sperm and the egg have discovered each other in the Fallopian tube. A unique human being has been created with 46 chromosomes which will determine the person's physical characteristics.

FIVE TO SEVEN WEEKS
Since the third week, the heart has been beating. The neural tube has enlarged into parts which will become the brain. The spine and spinal cord give the appearance of a tail. Facial features become visible. The eyes have a retina and lens. The major muscle system is developed and the unborn child begins to move. Blood cells are produced by the liver.

TWO MONTHS
The unborn child is half an inch long. The baby is protected by the amniotic sac where the baby swims and moves. Fingers are seen and brain waves are measured.

FOURTEEN TO SIXTEEN WEEKS
Muscles lengthen and become organized. The unborn child begins to kick and move. The child has an adult's taste buds. By four months, the baby is five and a half inches tall with eyebrows, eyelashes and fine hair.

FIVE MONTHS
The child can hear his or her mother's voice. The baby could survive if born at this stage. Fingernails, fingerprints and even sex organs appear.

SIX MONTHS
The unborn child is covered with a fine, downy hair called lanugo. The baby's skin is protected by vernix. The child breathes amniotic fluid into his or her developing lungs.

THIRTY TO THIRTY-TWO WEEKS
The umbilical cord has been the baby's access to nourishment for several months now. The unborn child sleeps most of the day.

FORTY WEEKS
The baby is ready for life outside the womb. The placenta will detach from the side of the uterus and the umbilical cord will no longer work. All the child's blood will now travel through the lungs because of the changes caused by the child's natural breathing outside of the womb.
