The Three Musketeers: Part One

So the picture above is of the beautiful scenery in front of Barrows Hall- I can’t believe flowers have started blooming here! For me, February means mushy snow, so it’s been quite nice enjoying the 50+ degree weather…but I think I spoke to soon and jinxed it! This past weekend was really rainy and I had to get out the old rainboots and umbrella going to class today…so before I digress any further about the wacky weather in Berkeley…

The main point of this post is about life in a triple on a coed floor! I figured this seems pretty uninteresting, but I never realized how important my living situation was until I actually moved away from home and family! Dorm life is like the epitome of the college experience (outside of the academic part or course!) I chose to live in Unit One(derful)…since it really is the awesomest unit! All kidding aside, I think Unit One really matches what I was looking for in terms of living space here at Cal for a couple of reasons: 1) being a music minor, it’s the closest to the music section of campus, 2) it’s close to Crossroads, the dining common with the most variety (I love to eat different foods).

When I learned that I did not get my first choice of building and room, I was pretty nervous: how would life be with two roommates (would we get along, have the same interests) and sharing bathrooms with the guys?!? Honestly, the first week was kind of awkward since we were all getting used to our new living quarters, but now I can’t imagine having dorm life another way. Since my roommates knew each other before college, I was worried that I’d be the odd woman out, but they have been the best roommates I could ever ask for (we’re even planning on living together next year too!), and my floor mates are definitely an interesting cast of characters- they make daily life so interesting and funny!

**coming up next Part 2: top ten reasons why a triple is worth it and top ten things to bring (or not bring) to the dorms! **

My first semester at Berkeley!

Cool sights from my dorm!

Cool sights from my dorm!

Hello everyone! My name is Stephanie, and I’m a freshman here at Berkeley! I’ve been so busy my first semester, so I’m glad that I can finally share it with you all!
Academically, first semester went pretty well for me. The biggest transition was learning how to manage my time- no one is here to tell you to go to classes or study. College life has definitely helped me cure my procrastination habits, and created the “college work is different from high school work” mentality that I needed towards my studies. This semester, as well as starting my major coursework, I took a couple of “fun” classes to help me get adjusted (which I also got credits for!).
There is never a dull moment here at Berkeley. Whether it’s attending club activities or just exploring the restaurants and shops near campus (or venturing into SF), life here keeps me busy! I have friends at other colleges that always say they have so much free time in college- not here at Berkeley! I was involved in a few clubs first semester, and I’m also a member of the Symphony orchestra- there are many opportunities to get involved in what you enjoy here on campus. I really enjoy my extracurriculars, even if they do jam pack my schedule (that’s what you call positive stress)!
It did not take me long to get adjusted to college life. For me, I wasn’t as stressed since I have an older sibling here…and I was excited for the beautiful Cali weather (this Chicago girl does not miss her snow)! I do have to admit though that I was nervous initially (friends?!? studies?!? dorm life?!?), and it took me some time to fully get accustomed to college life. But now Berkeley is someplace I can call home- sometimes I even forget I’m in a dorm away from my family!
Whew, that was my first semester at UCB in a nutshell- I’m so glad I have this opportunity to share it here. For all those prospectives out there who are finishing up their college applications (or maybe already finished), good luck and keep going- you’re on the last leg of the race! I’m so excited for my second semester- can’t wait to be back at Cal!
