The Cal Hiking and Outdoor Society (CHAOS), a UC-Berkeley student group (and staff/faculty and community member group), along with student groups the Cal Ski and Snowboard Club (CSSC) and the Geological Association at Berkeley (GAB) are sponsoring two mountain culture film events at UC Berkeley in February!!!


  • Thu, Feb 21, 2008, 7pm - 2040 VLSB - Backcountry Film Festival (skiing) - $6 admission.
  • Wed, Feb 27, 2007, 7pm - 155 Dwinelle - Higher Ground (climbing)- $10 general, $5 student/chaos.

Tickets can be purchased at Marmot MountainWorks at 3049 Adeline, or the the CSSC table on Sproul Plaza, M-Th 11-2pm.

We are locally supported by Marmot MountainWorks, Bay Area Wilderness Training (BAWT), and Clif Bar.

Backcountry Film Festival

BACKCOUNTRY FILM FESTIVAL POSTER


The Backcountry Film Festival is an event organized to support the Snowlands Network, a California non-profit dedicated to protecting winter wildlands and supporting opportunities for quality human-powered winter recreation, such as backcountry skiing and snowshoeing. The BFF contains several skiing-oriented clips including "Sublimation Experiment", "Weather We Change", "Skiing in the Shadow of Ghengis Khan", "Winter in the Woods", and "Alsek".   • Tickets $6 - purchase at Marmot Mountainworks (3049 Adeline, Berkeley), CSSC table on Sproul Plaza (M-Th 11-2), at CHAOS dinner (Wed 7:30 PM at La Val's/La Burrita on Euclid, Northside of UC Campus), or At The Door.


  • Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 7:30pm.


  • 2040 VLSB = 2040 Valley Life Science Building. VLSB is located just north of the Haas gym, and 2040 is an auditorium on the EAST side of the building - enter there.


Higher Ground Film

The film Higher Ground, by Chris Alstrin and Alex Lavigne, documents a yearlong journey as seen through the eyes of a selection of world-class climbers. Higher Ground focuses on the importance of exploration, passion for the mountains and those who pursue the lifestyle.


Several Higher Ground segments were selected as finalists at the 2007 Banff Film Festival. The film includes segments on ice climbing, rock climbing, backcountry skiing, and alpine climbing. Teasers are available HERE.


  • Tickets $10 general public, $5 student - purchase GENERAL at Marmot Mountainworks (3049 Adeline, Berkeley), STUDENT TIX at CSSC table on Sproul Plaza (M-Th 11-2), at CHAOS dinner (Wed 7:30 PM at La Val's/La Burrita on Euclid, Northside of UC Campus), or At The Door.


  • Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 7:30pm.


  • 155 Dwinelle is located just NW of Sproul Plaza (south side of UC Campus, near Zellerbach), room 155 is a classroom entered on the east side of the building.
