HARGROVE MUSIC LIBRARY
The Hargrove Music Library, located near Bancroft and College adjacent to Morrison Hall, is an excellent resource for locating music for your ensemble. The following is a brief guide to using the library catalog to find music:
- Go to http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/MUSI/
- Under “Online Music Resources,” click on “UC – Melvyl”
- Under “Optional Limits,” select “Scores (music)” in the format field.
- If you know the exact title of the piece you are looking for, select “Title” in the search field and then enter the name of the piece (e.g.: “Toccata and Fugue”).
- If you only want music from a certain composer, select “Author” and type in the name of the composer (e.g.: “Beethoven”)
- Otherwise, select “Keywords.” If you are looking for pieces for flute, violin, and piano, you should consider searching for something like “flute violin piano” or “flute violin piano trio.” Play around with your search terms until you find what you want.
- On the results page, click on “Details/Locations” to see more information about entries that interest you.
- The full view of the record will tell you which libraries in the UC system have it and allow you to check the availability of the item by clicking on “Circ status.” If the UC Berkeley library does not have it, you can go to the music library with the appropriate information and ask them to request it from the appropriate library. If it is available, you may go downstairs to the basement of the library where the scores are kept and check it out with your student ID card.
NOTE: Please be careful in the use of the library scores, as many are quite old and have loose pages.
