Associate Editor

History majors of any year may apply for this volunteer position. One must be proficient in grammar, sentence structure and diction. One also must have an understanding of what constitutes an intriguing and well-written research paper, and an interest in history and appreciation for uniqueness.

The Associate Editor will meet once with other Associate Editors and the Editors-in-Chief for paper distribution. At this meeting each Associate Editor will receive 3-4 research papers. They must read them in one week, and then email the Editors-in-Chief grades and comments for each paper. The Editors-in-Chief will then decide with the Associate Editor which paper is most suitable for publishing, and then the Associate Editor will have 3 weeks to edit the paper, meet with the author, and have the author email the final paper to the Editors-in-Chief.

If you feel you possess the skills to be an Associate Editor and also share a passion for history, please answer the following questions and submit them as an attachment (in .doc or .rtf format: Word is commonly used) to sangeetaprakash@berkeley.edu. Applications must submitted by Aug. 15, 2008 for the 2008-2009 academic year.

Questions:

1. What experiences would you say contribute to your abilities as an editor?

2. As an editor, you will be meeting in person with the author. How would you describe your communication style?

3. If you have written a research paper, please attach it along with explanations for the previous two questions. We rely heavily on this writing sample to judge your writing and editing abilities.
