About Us

The Cognitive Science Student Association (CSSA) is a community of undergraduates at UC Berkeley who are interested in the interdisciplinary study of cognition. We strive to fill the void created by the lack of a Cognitive Science department on campus by building a sense of community among Cognitive Science majors and those interested in the field. In addition to meeting weekly throughout the semester to plan events and discuss current issues, we coordinate academic events (including lectures by guest speakers, info sessions, and technical demonstrations), social events, and work with University administrative officials to represent the students of Cognitive Science. We advocate the Cognitive Science major by maintaining positive relations and open communication between Cog Sci faculty and students, strengthening ties that will lead to greater opportunities, such as research positions and internships, and providing a crucial synapse for vesicles of communication which will ensure the progressive development of this cutting-edge major.

Meetings are held at: 3105 Tolman Hall (map) at 6-7p on Tuesdays.

If you're interested in getting involved, just show up to one of our meetings! There are no requirements to join and you don't have to be a CogSci major. Just stop by to meet new friends and participate in stimulating discussions!

Current Officers for Fall 2009:

President
Allison Shapiro
Emphasis: Neuroscience

My name is Allison, I'm a third year CogSci major with a Neuroscience focus. I'm currently working in Bill Prinzmetal's lab doing behavioral research on visual attention and its correlates within different personality traits. I'm not sure what I'm going to do once I graduate, but I do not intend to be a grown up any time soon - so it's looking like more school. When I'm not doing school work I like going to sky high and jumping on trampolines, apple picking, napping on grass, traveling, adventures, and failing at cooking.

Vice President
Sahar Yousef
Emphasis: Philosophy and Neuroscience

When the dust has settled...all that is left is Cognitive Science.

Alumni Advisor
Katharine Clark
Major: Cog Sci and ISF
Emphasis: Neuroscience

I had two interdisciplinary studies majors so I know a little bit about everything. (Can you tell that I like keeping my options open?) Also, As I'm finally an Alumni and used to be a Super Duper Senior, I'm the go to person for unanswerable questions. Ask me anything!
For a few semesters I facilitated the Cognitive Science in Popular Culture and Culture and Cognition decals. If you want to take over facilitating, email me!

CCSC Chair & Webmaster
Jason Martin
Emphasis: Computational Modeling

I'm a fourth year undergraduate in cognitive science with an emphasis in computational modeling and statistics. I currently work in the Computational Cognitive Science Lab as both a research assistant and researcher. My interest is in using probabilistic models to investigate the structure of high dimensional natural categories. When I'm not doing cognitive science related things, I hike and catch up on sleep.
