DeCadence was founded in 1992 by Mark Skandera, an amazing guy -- he's now a math professor!
We are a co-ed a cappella group, and between 2005 and today we average 14.625 members, with 8.125 men and 6.5 women. However, these numbers have fluctuated throughout our history. We currently have 14 members!
Spring 2005 featured a competition in ICCA (pictured) at the North Eugene High School. We were put up by Oregon's Divisi, and our theme was "crazy colors." We recorded our album "Songs from the Closet." It's titled as such because it was recorded almost entirely in Patrick Schultz's closet! We also hosted the California state finals of the National Championship of High School A Cappella ("NCHSA") in Sunnyvale, California.
In the Spring of 2006 we performed in ICCA again, this time in Berkeley. We chose "black and capes" as our theme, with blue capes for the women, and gold capes for the men. These capes have hence been worn semi-regularly, and have become a symbol of group membership. This semester also saw the start of regular invitations to the California A Cappella Festival ("CAF", pictured), held at U.C.L.A. and hosted by U.C.L.A.'s Random Voices.
Fall 2006 saw the formation of the first DeCadence "house." This marked the first indicence of more than two DeCadence members sharing a residence. Our concert theme was "Fairy Tales," held in Dwinelle Hall.
The Spring of 2007 was a crazy semester. We traveled to UCLA for CAF, to Davis for HellaCappella, and to Santa Cruz for AcquireFest. We traveled to New York City for our Spring Tour: singing in Central Park, Times Square, in front of the Metropolitan Museum, and on the Today Show; singing with the NYU Vocaholics, and Columbia's Uptown Vocal. That semester, we met Martin Sheen, and sang at a wedding during the procession! Also, two videos of us became very popular on YouTube with close to a combined 1.5 million views! (One of these videos was later shown on CNN.) Our concert theme was "Journey to the Center of the Earth," held in Dwinelle Hall. The concert also marked DeCadence's 15th anniversary, accompanied by a reunion of alumni, and featured a joint performance of "Summertime / Motherless Child," being one of the oldest and most frequently sung songs in our repetoire.
In Fall 2007 we performed on a local radio station. Our concert was self-themed, held in Dwinelle Hall.
Spring 2008 introduced a second DeCadence "house," dubbed "DeCadence House: Deuce." The original DeCadence house was retroactively named "DeCadence House: Prime." We took a trip to Chicago (a little city that starts with a "C," ends with an "o," and in the middle contains the word "hicag") for Spring Tour. Our concert theme was "Soap Operas," held in North Gate Hall.
The Fall semester of 2008 saw DeCadence's largest group size to date, weighing in at 19 members. We had a "Sadie Hawkins" themed concert, held in Evans and Dwinelle halls. Our opening acts were the Men's Octet and Santa Cruz's Cloud Nine.
