time for a pint

When is the perfect time for a pint?

According to the supposed legend that I was told by some random bloke on a Dublin Bus, the founding year of the Guinness brewery actually provides the answer. Oh, really? If he was merely bullshitting me, then his almost-sublime narrative deserves to be the truth. These days, I reckon I would never let the truth get in the way of a good story. Needless to say, the stereotypically Irish seem to love telling stories.

It all started when I was travelling on the upper deck of a bus from Heuston Station to Temple Bar. I was reading aloud from my guidebook descriptions of historic buildings along our way to my inquisitive Argentine travelling companion. She asked how old some of the edifices were, and I began a litany of dates and names. Suddenly, a voice from behind us confidently volunteered, "I know when that one's built!" We cranked our heads around. An enthusiastic young man was pointing to the St. James brewery across the street.

We all smiled knowingly, since we knew that the founding date is featured prominently on the corporate logo. He then added, "But it also reminds us of the time to have the perfect pint."

He explained that after completing a hard day at work, you should head to your favourite pub (preferably with your mates) and ask for a pint just before 17.59. When you receive your glass, you should patiently allow the cold stout to settle for at least minute. This allows the heavier dark liquid to settle completely beneath the frothy head. When the Angeles finally strikes at 18.00, you’re now allowed to pick up your glass and drink, celebrating the commencement of evening.
