eps 115 website Our paper's concern is a comparative analysis of three Utah Sandstones: Navajo, Kayenta, and Grassy.  We will be using thin sections and a petrographic microscope to look at their minerological and petrological similarities and differences.  Observations have been made in the field regarding the stratigrphic similarities and differences of the respective formations.  In an attempt to further understand these large scale patterns, we plan to set up a series of experiments to test the relative weatherability of these sandstones.  Considering the arid climate of Utah, we hope to concentrate on the weathering rates of wind.  With an understanding of weathering rates of different sandstones, we hope to explain formational patterns that can be seen today.  These microscopic and macroscopic observations should lead to a discussion of the unique depositional environments of each sandstone and their relationships to the region's climatic history.
