After the EPS 119 Field Trip to Eastern Washington, Josh and I dropped the class and professor off at Portland Airport, stocked up on Eminem CDs (and crashing the car), and drove out to climb Mt. St. Helens. The climb was pretty straightforward--we brought snowshoes but only needed them for 20 minutes. Crampons were definitely necessary on some parts high on the mountain, but unconsolidated snow made the trekking lame at some points. We thought we had about 1500 more feet to go, but oh wait, the moutain blew up on 18 May 2003. Hey, this is a shorter climb than we expected! At the top we debated how close we were going to get to the rim, since we were probably standing on an unstable snow cornice. Josh decided that Alison would kill him if he died, so he contented himself with staying a couple feet back. We watched people ski down the ~2000 ft vertical from the top of the rim.
