English Class and education

For my English class freshman year a partner and I had to do a report on the U.S. Dept. of Education. We talked about what it was and did and also a lot of the topics that are hot right now.

Elearning came up a lot when we were researching. The growth of elearning is tremendous. People are finding out now more than ever that they can continue their education online and also stay committed to the activities and responsibilities that they already have. Parents can get their degree and further their education while still working and taking care of their children. Even the more elderly people are looking into it so they don't have to be on a campus with younger kids. Also I heard of a family friend who is my age (21 and in college for the first time) and his dad is sick but still wants to be in school. Through online courses he is able to spend time with his dad at home while he is sick and help out with his family and also work towards a degree so he is set for his future. This is an extremely meaningful opportunity to some people, especially them when it is a family situation.

Another thing that was big on the website that we saw was online computer training. There are a lot of programs where online training can help employees who already have a job, take classes and move up to the next level and get promoted. Or people who need to renew certifications can do so online while still working their current job.

Overall I learned a lot about the U.S. Dept. of Education and what they do. I really do think that we should learn more about it in high school because these things affect us directly. We are the future of America (as corny and cliché as that sounds) and we need to know all of the opportunities that are available to us so we can succeed using whatever tools possible. I am sure there are so many people who would like to go back to school and further their education and get a degree but they don't know what there is out there. We need to make sure people know what they can do and the options that they have to help them.
