Wheelchairs
When my sister was in 7th grade she had a bone infection and they had to take part of the bone in her ankle out. She had a huge surgery done and then she was in the hospital for about a week or so. When we could finally take her home, she had to be in a wheelchair for weeks before she could be on crutches and then back on her feet after therapy.
When we were leaving the hospital she had to be driven home by one of the handicap vans that they provided, because her bones were too weak to be lifted in and out of the chair so she just stayed seated and they would hook the chair up into the lift and then she would sit in the wheelchair buckled in the whole ride.
When we got home though we obviously didn't have one of those vans (I'm pretty sure at the time we still had a Porsche and a mustang that my parents didn't give up for SUV's until like 3 years later) so we had to rent one of the wheelchair vans from the hospital so she could be taken to and from doctors appointments.
It was sad to see her like that because it was hard for her to get around school (especially since she wasn't used to the wheelchair) and she was a really active person before so she would get really restless and annoyed easily. It was hard to find things for her to do that were fun because all of her other friends were at a sports practice or out (well they visited her of course) but there wasn't too much that she could do.
Finally she went on to start using crutches and we got rid of the handicapped vans (I think my parents were thankful because they were really hard to drive and they were afraid of getting into an accident and hurting her more). But she was on the crutches for awhile and she went to therapy and she was finally able to walk normally again about 3 months later, even though it seemed like 3 years to our family. But now she's in college and you can't even tell that she has had surgery, they said if she grew unevenly then they would have to go in and fix the other leg too because the injury was close to her growth plate, but thankfully she's still pretty even.
