In the United States, the adult online entertainment industry makes around $1 billion dollars a year. The revenue is expected to increase in the next five years to around $5 to $7 billion.(3) The industry is made up of a couple of large firms and many small firms. Since this business is able to generate so much revenue, it comes to no surprise why pornographic material is so prevalent on the Web.

Pornography’s presence online is astounding.

2. The total number of pornographic pages equals to around 372 million.(10) 
3. There are more than 100,000 adult-oriented subscription sites in the United States and about 400,000 sites globally.(14)
4. The number of pornographic Web pages jumped from 14 million in 1998 to 260 million in 2003. This represents a nearly 2,000 percent increase of pornography available online in just five years. (14)
5. The daily pornographic search engine requests is 68 million resulting in 25% of total search engine requests. (10)

        As seen from the statistics above, pornography accounts for large amount of trafficking on the Internet. Youth, Pornography, and the Internet explains that there are many online and offline methods used by the adult online industry to increase traffic of adult websites. Online methods would include sending spam mail to advertise, putting advertisements on other websites, paying search engine companies to place there site on the search engine results, attaining a sexually oriented name, and mouse trapping (paying other websites to receive their exit traffic). Offline methods would be advertising in magazines, television, or radio, and advertising through other adult entertainment companies. Through this significant traffic flow of sexually explicit material and the existence of this industry, children that access the Internet are and will be exposed to pornography more than once or twice.
