Goings-On About Town* /A Heads-Up on Cultural Events/ /ROBERT PINSKY/ Reading from his translation of The Inferno of Dante Tuesday February 13, 2007 at 12:30 p.m. 111 Minna Gallery (2nd and Minna) in San Francisco Three-time poet laureate Robert Pinsksy will read from his best selling-translation of The Inferno of Dante at a reading presented by the innovative reading series, Lit&Lunch. Pinskyıs acclaimed translation is known for being highly readable and entertaining in its accounts of the rings of Hell, while also staying true to the original. The work has received the Los Angeles Times Book Award and the Howard Morton Landon Prize for translation. One of the foremost poets in America today, Pinsky is also known for his dynamic speaking style and his tireless advocacy of poetry in the world. In 1997, he started the Favorite Poem Project which is ³dedicated to celebrating, documenting and promoting poetry's role in Americans' lives.² Pinskyıs lively presentation style derives from his belief that when people read poetry aloud, something remarkable happens. His Lit&Lunch reading is an ideal encounter with Dante for both aficionados and the first time listener. *3**. It is funded by a very generous philanthropist, and these five-year fellowships will include two true, non-teaching fellowship years, three years with typical graduate-assistant teaching obligations, and annual stipends of $25,000.00., with all tuition and fees paid as well. During the three teaching years of our program, students will teach composition courses, world literature courses, and perhaps a course in their field during year five. We have purposefully kept our Ph.D. program small and selective, at about 20 students, offering very personalized attention for those candidates. Mentor needed! /I'm looking for a mentor (just to meet a few times) for a 17 yr. old high school junior who I think is starting to feel disconnected from what he's expected to learn. He's bright, taking good courses but he's starting to feel the futility of taking things that he feels are unimportant to what he now believes are his future plans. There seems to be a struggle within him, a confusion of sorts that needs to be resolved. I need someone closer to his age that can help him to understand a temporary purpose for applying himself, i.e., why he needs to say take a math or science course even though he's only really interested in English, journalism, film and fine arts courses. I'm not looking for a tutor, but more of a mentor who can relate to ... been there ... know the feeling ... kind of person. He's currently the opinion editor of his school paper and does very well in subjects in which he's interested but not so well in subjects he doesn't see the point of taking. He hangs out with a lot of seniors and first year college students but I don't always believe they give him good information. He's around a lot of kids whose parents have more money than brains, so I think the kids have unrealistic expectations of what the world holds for them. He's intelligent, articulate, has lots of friends and shies away from what he believes are superficial ideas, conformity and the general corporate environment. We would work out a fee schedule for the mentor. Sincerely, Eileen Scanlan eileeninca@hotmail.com /WriterCoach Connection/ Help 7-9th graders develop their thinking and writing skills!
