THE SPORT

Fencing is deeply rooted in Cal athletic tradition, with a team existing in some form since the founding of the school. The sport itself dates back much further, and can be counted as one of the longest-practiced combat disciplines in history. Fencing today is a fast-paced and challenging sport – at the same time, it is accessible to a wide range of ages and stylistically can be tailored to all levels of athleticism.

Fencing matches (or “bouts”) are competed one-on-one, using one of three weapons: foil, epee, or sabre. The weapons differ in build, rules, and target area for scoring, so different techniques and strategies exist for each. For example, foil and epee can only score touches with the tip of the blade, while the sabre can score touches with the entire length and tip. Additionally, foil and sabre are governed by the system of “right of way” to determine priority in simultaneous touches, but these rules are not included in epee fencing.

The Cal Fencing Club is home to fencers of all three weapons. To find out more about the club, go here!
