The Office Crush

By Garett Ng

She was the kind of person who just made you forget about all your problems, worries, or disagreements and made you think that everything would be okay. She always made it a point to smile and say good morning to you no matter how preoccupied you looked and good night to you before she left work for home. She was my office crush and after the first time I met her six months ago, I fell in love with her.

The problem is that I didn’t know her. In fact, all we’ve ever said to her were our good mornings and good evenings every day. Those were the best moments of the day, and I would be so enamored and speechless after she would pass by my tiny little cubicle that I’d forget to even ask, “How are you doing?”

Her name was Molly. It took me three weeks to figure it out, although she knew my name right away. I felt bad. I had to pour over my orientation binder and find the floor plan to track down her name. I felt terrible; she had already invested so much in our relationship by just remembering her name and I couldn’t even give the courtesy of remembering her simple name. What are we going to tell our kids when they ask us how we first met? How your dad was so head over heels for your mom that he had to take a moment each time she passed by to calm down and let his heart beat back normally again? How absurd!
