Assignment Three Due April 16

In newspaper assignment three you will be required to respond to an Opinion / Editorial (Op Ed) piece from a recent PRINT source approved by Professor Crawford. The piece must discuss some aspect of current US foreign policy. The piece should be an editorial or opinion article. DO NOT respond to a letter to the editor. Staple a copy of the Op Ed piece to your assignment.

Choose an Op Ed piece that you disagree with (Or that you can argue against using the tools you have gained in this class). Perhaps you disagree with the stance taken by the author. Perhaps their reasoning is flawed. Perhaps he misuses historical analogy. Quite possibly the author does not thoroughly understand US policy to the extent you have learned it over the past 10 weeks.

Your assignment is to write a letter to the editor of the newspaper in response to the Op Ed piece you have chosen. Use the historical AND conceptual understanding of US foreign policy that you have gained in this course. Be sure to identify the concepts from class visible in the Op Ed piece you are responding to and use materials and knowledge you have gained in this class to support your critique.

Space for letters to the editor is very limited. Your writing is limited to 650 words. List the word count at the beginning of your letter. (You can use a word count function or do it the old fashioned way) Note that letters exceeding the maximum word count are often discarded by the editorial board at the paper you are writing.
