Tennis Courts

Left: Tennis

I was never good at tennis, but I loved the sport. For quite a while, the boy's tennis team was not large enough to have a junior varsity team, and this was certainly the case in 2001 and 2002. Consequently, I received varsity pins for tennis, even though I didn't play well enough to deserve one. I tried working on my serve so much though, and I stayed overtime to practice some more. Yet, I was never up to par with the rest of the team as far as skill went. Our tennis team played schools both regional and somewhat far, from York to (yes, even) Lowell, I hear. We had some nationally ranked guys playing on our tennis team, and it was an eye-opening experience to watch my schoolmates and friends play tennis with such grace and power.

Right: Track and Field

My abilities were more fit for track instead of tennis, yet I never seemed to enjoy track very much. I ran a good season of track during my sophomore year, and then I decided never to do track again. That's how much I disliked it. I don't remember exactly what my times at the end of that one season were, but I know that my best one-mile time was about 5 minutes and 50-something seconds, and that was a race where I was almost dead last. My best two-mile time was approximately 13 minutes, more or less. It was either 12 minutes something, or 13 minutes something. I remember that race fairly well too because it was my last race for the entire track season. I kept telling myself while I was racing that it was my last, last, last race in track, and then I would never have to do track again. So I ran faster to get it over with sooner.

Left: Baseball

Actually, I never played baseball at Stevenson. I played it at Dhahran School though. The baseball field lies adjacent to the track, which is just bordering the field uphill. I could always see the baseball players whenever I was running laps around the track, and I could always see it whenever I was picking up tennis balls that flew outside the court. (The tennis courts border the baseball field too.) But the only time I ever walked on the baseball field was when we ran across it during a track practice, and it was muddy. Some memory. (No, there weren't any people there when we ran across it.)

Right: Swimming

I wasn't on the swimming team at Stevenson, but my sister was. She was on the swim team during all of her years there, and she also joined the water polo team during her senior year. As for me, cross-country involved using the pool for pool workouts on Saturday mornings, but I spent most of my time with the aqua-jogging group instead of the swimming group...out of laziness and a distaste for the lack of lane dividers during the workouts. (And after those workouts, we'd always have Orange Juliuses, homemade by my cross-country coach (and AP Calc teacher) Mr. Thayer. The swimming pool is surrounded by all four of the major dorms - Atwood in the back, Wilson and Silverado on the left, and Day Hall, from which this photo was taken.
