Eastbay Workday

These are our classic "Build Days" in which we help construct homes in the Bay Area. This means we nail, saw, hammer, paint, and anything else it takes to get the job done! If you're interested in seeing the tangible effects of your service and the ascension of a bunch of wood and nails into a warm, loving home, then there's nothing like a build day.

Local Workday

We help with community rebuilding, neighborhood revitalization, and park beautification projects. Whether it be helping create a beautiful garden, collecting food for zoo animals, or putting on a huge white suit to scrape lead paint off of a house, local workdays are some of the most enjoyable experiences that we have. Our typical volunteer sites include the Chaparral House, the Oakland Zoo, and Rebuilding Together Oakland.

Soup Kitchen

We help prepare and serve food to the homeless at local soup kitchens. These are some of the most memorable and rewarding opportunities we have because we get the chance to directly interact with our beneficiaries. That is, we're able to share and exchange stories with those whom we serve and come away with changed perspectives. Our typical volunteer sites includes St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Newman Hall, First Presbyterian Church, and Challah for Hunger.

Fundraising

We sell food at concession stands during the football and basketball games in order to raise funds for Habitat. This is a crucial part of what we do because without funds, much of our service would not be possible. If you like keeping busy and rampant activity, then this is the opportunity for you! And if you join us, you will also enjoy some free food and soda and might to get to watch some of the games!

Education

We facilitate a decal called "Affordable Housing Issues." This is the intellectual side to Habitat in which we examine the larger social, economic, and political factors that contribute to the prevalence of homelessness and affordable housing crises. In addition to the Decal, we also plan fun and interactive games for the general meetings that will allow members to learn a little more about why we do what we do.

Community Outreach (CO)

We plan a huge event every semester dedicated to the families who live in Habitat homes. The event is geared towards the children and allows us maintain lasting bonds and relationships with the Habitat families. The themes of some of our past events have been "Animal Kingdom", "It's a Small World", "Science World", "Think Big", and "Superheroes." If you love working with kids, then this is the committee for you!

Special Events

In the Fall, we plan our classic event "Berkeley Build Day" in which we build playhouses for underprivileged kids. This includes assembling the playhouses from scratch and painting original designs. In the Spring, we help plan the "Poverty Symposium," which is a day filled with speakers, forums, workshops, and panels all dedicated to raising awareness on various poverty and homelessness issues.

Publicity

We spread Habitat's message across campus and try to get as many Berkeley students involved in community service as possible. We manage tabling and chalking schedules for officers but we also collaborate with general members to come up with new ways of publicizing our club. If you are interested in helping us design new fliers or t-shirts, then we would love to meet you!

Media

We are primarily responsible for managing the website, making newsletters and the presentations for the general meetings, and documenting all the great work that has been done over the course of the semester through pictures and videos. Although much of our work is behind the scenes, we would love to work with you if you have any new ideas for website, newsletters, or fliers. We also work on creative projects now and again and would love your participation!

Collegiate Challenge (CC)

We embark on a week-long service trip in which we work with a Habitat affiliate to help build a home. CC has taken place domestically and internationally, and past volunteer sites have included Clearwater, FL, Georgetown, SC, Tacoma, WA, New Orleans, LA and even Jamaica! Participants often remark that CC is one of the most rewarding experiences they have had in college because of the tangible effects of their service and the precious bonding time they share with other Habitaters.

Social

In addition to serving our community, we also like to have fun! Socials are a great way to get to know fellow Habitaters and unwind from the pressures of Berkeley life. Whether it's during rock climbing, bowling, chilling on Memorial Glade, or jamming to some karaoke, we love to hang out with general members and welcome new people into our Habitat family.
