Cal Habitat for Humanity Alumni
Anjali Banthia - Anjali graduated
in the Spring of 2003 with a BS in Business Administration and a
Minor in Political Economy of Industrialized Societies. She was
an active member of CAL Habitat during her last semester at Berkeley.
After graduating, she joined the Brand Marketing team at the Clorox
Company in Oakland. Anjali currently lives in San Francisco, and
regularly volunteers with both the San Francisco and East Bay Habitat
chapters. Anjali is a member of the East Bay Habitat Family Selection
Committee and most recently, worked on the selection process for
the Livermore and West Oakland sites.
Courtney
Brown - Courtney graduated in 2003 after serving with Cal Habitat
for 3-4 years. She served on the fundraising committee during the
2002-03 year.
Tyler Duni - Tyler graduated in the spring
of 2004 with a B.S. in Computer Science. He was active all four
years at Cal and served as president during his Junior year (2002-2003).
During that time he helped co-lead the first Global Village trip
with Joanna So to Zambia. He also faciliated the Affordable Housing
decal with Matt Weber. He is currently working with a software company
in the Bay Area called BigFix Inc.
Deepa Janakid - Deepa graduated in the spring of 2002,
with a double major in Mass Communications and Political Science.
From Fall of 1999 to Spring of 2001, she was the Volunteer Coordinator
and semi-Vice President of Habitat. Starting Summer 2001, I was
the President and Programming Manager. She is currently going into
her second year at NYU Law School, spending this summer working
for the San Francisco Public Defender's office (continuing the good
works). She plans to graduate from law school in 2005. Deepa says,
"Habitat was one of the best experiences of my time at Cal.
You'd think it'd be hard to get people to do manual labor at 8 am
on a Saturday, but it was so much fun and so rewarding, it felt
like hanging out with your best friends. Plus, when you see the
look on the recepient family's face, you know you've made a difference.
We may not have changed the world, but it definitely changed me
for the better."
Abbas Kothari - Abbas graduated in the spring of 2006
with a degree in Molecular Cell Biology (emphasis on Genetics).
He was active for five semesters and served as publicity chair during
his Senior year (2005-2006). Abbas made a memorable contribution
to Habitat with his Hammer and Nail costumes as well as his "witty"
fliers that are still in use by the Publicity Committee. He is currently
living in the South Bay, working as an Americorps member with a
company called Sports4Kids. He is also applying to medical schools
around the country.
Jesse Le - Jesse graduated in December
2004 with a B.A. in Molecular and Cell Biology. He joined Cal Habitat
in 2002 and served as a St. Mark's workday coordinator for two years,
doubled as webmaster, built houses in Zambia as part of Cal's first
Global Village trip, and finally took on the role of president during
the spring and fall semesters of 2004. He is currently enjoying
life across the bay as a medical student at the University of California,
San Francisco.
Lydia Leung - Lydia graduated in Spring 2003
with a B.A. in Molecular and Cell Biology. Lydia was active in Habitat
for 3-4 years, served as Vice-President, and facilitated the Decal
in 2002-2003. She has really helped our organization with her contributions. After
graduation, she will be working at Operation Access, a non-profit
organization that matches underserved minorities without health
insurance with private hospitals for free elective surgery.
Vicki Liao
Year Graduated & Major: May 2005, Business Admin.
Position in Cal Habitat: was PR co-officer in '03 and Vice President in '04
What I'm doing now: I recently quit my corporate job and moved from SF to
Hawaii, and am loving it! I started a business out here with a fellow Cal
alum, so I've been busy trying to make some money. In my free time I hula
dance- no just kidding! I go to the beach (of course) and just took up body
boarding. I hope to volunteer with the Habitat for Humanity out here when
things get established with my business. I miss Cal Habitat and all my old

Allen Lo - Allen graduated From Cal in 1999 with a B.A. in
Economics. He served as one of Cal Habitat's co-founders and is
currently working for the City of San Jose. For Allen "Habitat
was an affirmation of 3 things. (1) Given the opportunity, people
are willing to put their sweat and time into building a home and
community. (2) A community, working together can build anything,
cheaper, more efficiently, and with more care than any corporation.
(3) There are people just like me that want to help and don't mind
getting down and dirty to do so." Allen is "glad
there are students that continue to help with the program and help
build homes."
Tam Ma - Tam graduated From Cal in 2002 with a B.A. in
Political Science & City Planning, having served as co-founder,
President, DeCal facilitator for 3 semesters. She is currently doing
a one-year public policy fellowship with the California State Senate,
working as a Legislative Aide for Senator Sheila Kuehl on housing,
among other issues. Tam says, "Being involved with Cal Berkeley
Habitat exposed me to the need for decent and affordable housing,
and made me realize that there's no simple solution to this growing
problem. Habitat also built my confidence--I went out to the worksites
and did construction work, which is usually seen as men's work.
It's empowering to be out there and making a difference!"
Alexa Taylor - I graduated from Cal in 2004 in Political Science (yes, yet another political science major).
I was a member of Habitat for two years, and was a member of, and then a co-head of, the
fundraising committee. I am now roughly 6,000 miles away in Scotland getting my masters in
International Security Studies from the University of St. Andrews. Habitat for Humanity is a
great organization -- excellent mission, great integration of volunteers and beneficiaries, a
great way to see what it takes to build a house -- and Cal Habitat is full of really wonderful
people. I have great memories of overcoming my dislike of heights and nailing down second-story
floor boards, battling with the help of some other Cal Habitat people against a very stubborn
steel-frame house, and taking an excellent trip to Santa Cruz with all the officers. I hope you
are all well, keeping up the great work you do, and recruiting lots of new members. And thank you
again for the signed construction hat!
Mathew Weber - Matt graduated in the winter of 2002 with
a B.S. Business Administration. He was our first student member
of the East Bay Habitat Board of Directors, helped facilitate the
DeCal, and was a Building Day Coordinator. He is currently working
in the Bay Area for The Olson Company and is still active with Cal
Habitat.
