Local,
National, and International Involvement
Habitat for Humanity International has affiliates and chapters throughout
the nation and the world. As part of the international Habitat community,
Cal Habitat for Humanity is involved on local, national, and international
levels. We work closely with the East Bay, Peninsula, and San Francisco
affiliates in the Bay Area and take part in the Global Village and
Collegiate Challenge programs each year.
Collegiate Challenge
Like to travel? Tired of doing the same job every
time you go to a workday? Don't have plans for winter or spring
break? If you answered yes to any of these questions, Collegiate
Challenge may be just the thing for you! Collegiate Challenge is
Habitat for Humanity's year-round alternative break program that
gives college students the opportunity to spend one week of their
school break building a home with a Habitat for Humanity affiliate
in the United States. Here are the places Cal Habitat for Humanity
has sent college students to:
New Orleans
2007
Kauai 2005
Cal Habitat sent a team of enthusiastic members across
the Pacific on a weeklong building trip to the lovely Hawaiian island
of Kauai. They learned about the different housing needs outside
of California, experienced the pride in watching the daily progression
of their house, bonded with other Cal Habitat members, and basked
in the sun while everyone else freezes in Berkeley.
Campus Chapters Tithe Challenge
By sending funds to other countries, campus chapters with limited resources can see their efforts go
much further than they would in the United States. In Spring 2004, Cal Habitat decided to tithe a total of
$750 to Guatemala, the Philippines, and Zambia, which is more than what was tithed in '02-'03 by all of the
Western States Campus Chapters combined ($450)! Additionally, the Global Village Zambia team donated more
than $4000 to the local affiliate during their January 2004 trip.
Global Village
Zambia 2004
On January 2, 2004, 11 members of Cal Habitat (Joanna So, Tyler
Duni, Brett Dalton, Janice Chang, Jackie Erbe, Melissa Ip, Jesse
Le, Lisa Molinaro, Tricia Powell, Alicia Wittmeyer, and Charlene
Yamaoka) traveled to Lusaka, Zambia for two weeks and worked with
Habitat for Humanity affiliate Tiyende Pamodzi to build homes for
families living in substandard conditions as part of the Global
Village program. Besides living and working directly with local
Zambian families in order to better understand global housing issues,
the team had the opportunity to travel around the country and participate
in cultural and recreational activities.
