Field Study Internship

FSI is the only undergraduate pre-medical program recognized by the Association of American Medical Colleges. The Field Study Internship is a 3-unit semester long internship that gives Cal students who are thinking about a possible career in medicine an opportunity to experience the life of a physician first-hand. Interns are paired with prominent Bay Area physicians in their field of interest (eg. pediatrics, urology, obstetrics, cardiology, plastic surgery, etc.). During the semester, they observe and interact with these physicians as they deal with patients, ethical issues, paperwork, and problems in their daily practices 6-8 hours a week. This opportunity not only provides interns with an intimate view of the life of a doctor, but also with an opportunity to form a relationship with that doctor.

n addition to shadowing, interns have an opportunity to discuss current topics in health care and bioscience with their peers in a small group setting. These sections, led by two former Interns, provides an intimate setting which allows for a level of discussion that is often lacking at a university as large as Cal. Every intern, whether they subsequently decide to pursue a career in medicine or not, matriculates from the program with a new awareness of their place in our health care system. Shadowing a practicing physician is an experience that enables each of our interns to make a better decision about their career goals as well as their own health.

FSI is sponsored by the School of Public Health and is an ASUC Student-Initiated Service Group.
