Women in Science

Who We Are

Women in Science is a UC Berkeley-based student-run group that brings together graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty members for monthly meetings. Through informal discussions, presentations, and workshops, we discuss topics relating to success both in graduate school and in future careers.

Some recent meetings have focused on advice on giving an excellent job talk, writing a grant, obtaining dual faculty hires, negotiating, promoting confidence, mentoring, and exploring alternative careers to academia.

We intersperse informational meetings with informal discussions with distinguished UC Berkeley faculty members.

Announcement: November Meeting

November 10th, 1-2:30pm, 5053 VLSB

We will hear from Dr. Kelly Dorgan, Dr. Nathalie Nagalingum, and Dr. Nicole Perfito, in our Postdocs on Parade meeting.

Come here their experiences as postdocs in IB, and what they're thinking about for the future.  Bring your questions about finding a postdoc, securing funding, successfully completing research projects on a short time frame, and anything else you're wondering about.

   

Bring a first or second year you know to the meeting.  Postdocs and Faculty are welcome, too!

 

From our October meeting

For our first lunch meeting of the semester, we were lucky to hear from Dr. Dorothy Jones-Davis, an Isis Fellow at UC San Francisco.  She shared her perspective on being a postdoc and new parent, and had lots of advice for time and money management, as well as career satisfaction.  Thanks to Dorothy and to the many of our members who came to chat with her.

From our September meeting

We had a great kick-off meeting with many new faces and returning members offering their perspectives on women in academia and in careers in general.  We also discussed upcoming meeting topics and our plans to create a mentorship list to support grad students within the department.  If you have ideas for meeting topics or are interested in the mentorship program, email us!
